08-12-2025 - 10:30 AM - From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics - Economics Daily - In July 2025, both the unemployment rate, at 4.2 percent, and the number of unemployed people, at 7.2 million, changed little. The number of long-term unemployed (people jobless for 27 weeks or more) increased by 179,000 to 1.8 million in July and was up by 283,000 over the year. The long-term unemployed represented 24.9 percent of the unemployed in July, the highest percentage since February 2022. Over the last decade, this ratio has ranged from 4.0 percent in April 2020 to 42.9 percent in March 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
08-12-2025 - 11:01 AM - I contacted a station in Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge (US-0314) in Louisiana on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program. POTA hunter count: 544
08-12-2025 - 12:20 PM - From the U.S. Federal Trade Commission - FTC says online dating service misled users about “guarantees,” made it difficult for consumers to cancel, and unfairly retaliated against consumers who initiated failed chargebacks - Match Group, Inc., and Match Group, LLC (Match), the owners and operators of online dating services Match.com, OkCupid, PlentyOfFish, The League, and other dating sites, have agreed to pay $14 million, permanently stop misrepresenting guarantees and locking consumers out of paid-for accounts, and simplify Match.com’s cancellation processes to resolve the Federal Trade Commission’s charges.
08-12-2025 - 6:00 PM - The local group is active on CB Radio Channel 23. Later tonight - 8:00 - the Clay Couny ham will be on 146.800 MHz. Tune in, or join in.
08-11-2025 - 5:10 AM - Good Morning! It's Monday, and I'm having lunch with a friend at the Grand Buffet this afternoon. The CB Radio and Ham Radio are quiet at the moment. There is a little Morse code activity on the 40-meter band, but the CB Radio band has yet to open up for long-distance communications. No local trucking chatter yet, either. I might have to resort to the Morse code trainer app on my computer to get some code music going. The only thing going on the scanner radio is the James V. Allred Unit at 153.815 MHz, and the County Jail at 155.520 MHz. At least my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready. Things will improve.
08-11-2025 - 5:15 AM - Wichita Falls NWS Forecast - Today: Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 98. Heat index values as high as 101. South southeast wind around 8 mph. 08-11-2025 - 5:25 AM - According to Water Data for Texas, Wichita Falls reservoirs are: Arrowhead: 93.0% Kemp: 100% Kickapoo: 97.2%. Monitored Water Supply Reservoirs are 96.7% full. The City of Wichita Falls uses combined levels of Arrowhead and Kickapoo (95.1%) to determine drought stage.

08-11-2025 - 6:20 AM - Did you attend the air show at Sheppard Air Force Base in April of 2024? If so, did you notice the Air Force sniper on the catwalk of the control tower? The world has changed.

08-11-2025 - 7:00 AM - Local trucking traffic is picking up on CB Radio Channel 1. These individuals are on the radio most mornings, but I'm unsure who they are or what they do in the trucking industry.
08-11-2025 - 7:30 AM - I don’t participate in “hobby radio” discussion forums, but I do visit them occasionally. In these forums and on social media platforms, I often see Hobby Radio enthusiasts proclaim their joy and/or skill in constructing antennas, as opposed to things like “home-brewing” radios. Of course, it’s antennas. For the average Hobby Radio enthusiast, and I include myself, today’s radios are nothing more than a “black box” on the schematic diagram. You might as well see a microphone (or Morse code key), antenna, and power cord, all attached to a black box. There's no need to see inside the black box, as it’s unserviceable for most who peer inside. That leaves antennas. In the past, being called an “appliance operator” was not a major insult. Now, most Hobby Radio enthusiasts are just that, appliance operators. I’m an appliance operator, and I feel no shame. Your mileage may vary.

08-11-2025 - 9:15 AM - The Amateur (ham) Radio simplex frequency of 146.520 MHZ is getting a good workout this morning. There must be a band opening (tropospheric ducting) because I hear two Oklahoma stations booming in and one of them is north of Oklahoma City. That's not an everyday occurrence on VHF.
08-11-2025 - 10:15 AM - From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics - Economics Daily - Labor productivity in the nonfarm business sector increased 2.4 percent in second quarter 2025, following a decrease of 1.8 percent in the prior quarter. The rise in labor productivity in second quarter 2025 resulted from a 3.0-percent increase in output combined with a 1.3-percent increase in hours worked. Unit labor costs in the nonfarm business sector increased 1.6 percent in the second quarter of 2025, reflecting a 4.0-percent increase in hourly compensation and a 2.4-percent increase in productivity. BLS calculates unit labor costs as the ratio of hourly compensation to labor productivity. Increases in hourly compensation tend to increase unit labor costs and increases in productivity tend to reduce them. During the current business cycle, starting in the fourth quarter of 2019, labor productivity has grown at an annualized rate of 1.8 percent, reflecting a 2.4-percent rate of growth in output and a 0.6-percent rate of growth in hours worked. The 1.8-percent annualized rate of productivity growth in the current business cycle thus far is higher than the 1.5-percent rate of the previous business cycle from the fourth quarter of 2007 through the fourth quarter of 2019 and is below the long-term rate of 2.1 percent since the first quarter of 1947.
08-11-2025 - 3:00 PM - From the U.S. Federal Communications Commission - FCC ENFORCEMENT BUREAU ISSUES NOTICE OF ILLEGAL PIRATE RADIO BROADCASTING (NIPRB) TO XXXXXXX. The FCC Enforcement Bureau issued a Notice of Illegal Pirate Radio Broadcasting (NIPRB) per its authority from the PIRATE Act to New Jersey property owner for allowing illegal broadcasting from their property.. by NIPRB. EB. Names removed by Wichita Falls Radio as being irrelevant. Don't be a pirate!
08-11-2025 - According to one news item, AOL will discontinue dial-up Internet service after thirty years. I had no idea anyone still offered dial-up Internet.
08-11-2025 - 5:30 PM - The Wichita Falls Amateur (ham) Radio Skywarn® storm spotter net was activated this evening when a thunderstorm formed over the city. It appears that actual spotter activity was minimal as the storm appeared to be moving into Clay County. In Wichita Falls, tune in with your scanner radio at 146.940 MHz. Tune in to Clay County spotters at 146.800 MHz. UPDATE: It seems that this storm stalled out over Wichita Falls where it contrinues to grow.
08-10-2025 - 5:45 AM - Good Morning! It's Sunday, and the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile is scheduled to be at United on Old Iowa Park Road today. They are giving away Wienermobile whistles. There’s a joke in there, and I’ll leave it there. The Wichita Amateur Radio Society holds a weekly informal net on Sundays at 8:00 PM on the club's 147.140 MHz repeater. As far as I know, all licensed Amateur (ham) Radio operators are invited to check in. Of course, scanner radio enthusiasts can also tune in. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.
08-10-2025 - 6:00 AM - Wichita Falls NWS Forecast - Today: Sunny and hot, with a high near 101. Heat index values as high as 104. South wind around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 75. Southeast wind 7 to 11 mph.
