04-11-2024 - From my law enforcement consultant - Have you noticed the number of TV cop shows featuring "plain clothes" officers with their guns shoved around to the front? What are directors thinking? No cop would wear a gun like that. You're TV cops - we know you have a gun. No need to stick it in our faces.

04-11-2024 - There are a few aircraft getting some time in at Kickapoo Airport (122.700 MHz) this morning. I haven't heard anything at Wichita Valley (122.800 MHz) yet. That brings to mind Danaher Airport (123.075 MHz) just south of Lake Wichita. According to online sources, the airport is private and requires permission to use. I just plugged 123.075 MHz into my scanner radio. Let's see what happens!
04-11-2024 - NWS Forecast - Today: Sunny, with a high near 72. North northwest wind 7 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Tonight: Clear, with a low around 48. Light and variable wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph after midnight.
04-11-2024 - Good Morning! A trip to Natural Grocers is on the schedule for today. I'll be doing everything I can to make sure that is my only trip out of the house. I have radios and coffee right here! Speaking of coffee, mine is ready!
04-10-2024 - I need 12 more states to have worked a park in all 50 U.S. states on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) for the Parks on the Air® program. South Dakota is one, and someone was operating out of a park there this afternoon. I spent a good half-hour trying to get my call sign heard, to no avail. His signal was "in and out", and I finally gave up and went outside to pull more weeds. I'll catch that station, or someone else, there another day.

04-10-2024 - I heard a guy on the ham radio tell another guy that he was out looking for his dog. That reminded me of a time 40 years ago when my neighbor came to my house to frantically tell me that my dog had gotten out of the yard. I thanked the neighbor, and I told him that my dog gets "three hots and a cot" here, and if he wants that to continue, he'll come back. Had the dog been anything but a people-loving dog, I would have gone after him in the interest of public safety. He was back in a few minutes.
04-10-2024 - While riding my "under the desk" exercise bike I was listening to some old guys on 80 meters discuss medical issues. It's kind of funny because young hams seem to enjoy poking fun at the old guys for just that reason. They poke fun because it's true. When old guys get together on the HF bands - 80 or 160 meters - for regular get-togethers, health issues are sure to pop up. For the record, I'm 72. If I call someone old, there might be something to it. After hearing enough "sick call", I switched to CB Radio Channel 19 for some local trucking traffic. I'll kill time there until the 20-meter ham band opens for some Parks on the Air® CW. For you non-hams, CW = Morse code.
04-10-2024 - NWS Forecast - Today: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. North wind 13 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. North wind 8 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.
04-10-2024 - The Bible admonishes us to love our neighbors, and also to love our enemies - probably because they are generally the same people.
04-10-2024 - Good Morning! It's the 45th anniversay of the April 10, 1979 tornado, referred to by many as Terrible Tuesday. I was there. There's more rain in the forecast, and that's good. We need to get those lakes charged up for the hot summer ahead. At 5:00 AM, our local transit bus drivers are on the air at 453.5375 MHz. I didn't know they started that early. I was up early this morning because I heard a noise in the house. I didn't find anything, so I'll blame it on gremlins - the invisible kind. My coffee is ready!
04-09-2024 - The Clay County Amateur Radio Club conducts a weekly Skywarn practice net on Tuesdays at 8:00 PM on the 146.800 and 146.680 MHz repeaters. Tune in with your scanner radio.

04-09-2024 - On the Parks on the Air® spotter page, I see two stations operating in Blue River State Fishing Lake in Oklahoma, and they're both on the same 20-meter frequency. The ground wave must be beating them to death. Surely, one of them will spin the dial. Or, maybe they'll battle it out.
04-09-2024 - I made contact with W8EH at Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail (US-4572) in Iowa on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.
04-09-2024 - At 10:30 AM I hear a scratchy signal on 437.800 MHz. This is the downlink frequency for the Amateur (ham) Radio FM repeater aboard the International Space Station. The uplink frequency is 145.990 MHz.

04-09-2024 - At 7:30 AM, it sounds like some kids have received a set of "bubble pack" radios and are on the air on 467.6875 MHz. I wish we had these when I was a kid. I had the almost stone-age, single-channel, Space Phone CB Radio walkie-talkies. Okay, the Space Phones were advanced for the time!
