04-14-2024 - I hear traffic at Wichita Valley Airport on 122.800 MHz. It's been quiet out there the last few days. Or, maybe I've just been missing the calls. Tune in with your scanner radio.

04-14-2024 - I made contact with K7SHR at Salt Lick Trail BLM Recreation Management Area (US-10886) in Wyoming on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

04-14-2024 - Good Morning! It's Sunday and that means the Wichita Amateur Radio Society will hold its weekly informal net tonight at 8:00 PM on the club's 147.140 MHz repeater. All licensed Amateur (ham) Radio operators are invited to check in. Scanner radio enthusiasts are also invited to listen in. But, right now, my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready!

04-13-2024 - I made contact with WJ5K at Natchez Trace Parkway National Parkway (US-0642) in Alabama on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

04-13-2024 - I made contact with N7XJ at Maple Canyon Wildlife Management Area (US-11204) in Utah on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

04-13-2024 - At about 6:30 AM, I heard a couple of "hams" on the 147.140 MHz repeater on the way to some location that sounded like an event involving radio communications support. After listening, it looks like support for the annual THOR - Texoma's Hellacious Obstacle Run in Lucy Park. This might or might not have canceled the regular Saturday morning Pioneer #3 breakfast mentioned earlier. I should have known about THOR, but it snuck up on me.

04-13-2024 - Good Morning! It's Saturday, and a group of local Amateur (ham) Radio operators usually meet at Pioneer #3 at 8:00 AM. There is a little bit of a VHF band opening this morning because I can hear the Fort Worth 146.940 MHz repeater. I hear a Parks on the Air® station on 40 meters, but I have the antenna tuner set for 20 meters, and it's too early to be twisting knobs. I haven't even had my coffee yet! But it's ready now, so I'll grab a cup.

04-12-2024 - I hear a W6CSN at the Presidio of SF National Historic Site (US-7889 - Parks on the Air® program) on 14.062 MHz with a weak CW (Morse code) signal. I'd like to get that one in the log since I was stationed there when it was an Army post. It shows up occasionally, so I'll wait for better conditions. UPDATE: I hung in there, and his signal improved slightly so I grabbed the key and pounded out my call sign. He asked for a repeat, and I sent it again. He acknowledged.

04-12-2024 - Our local Air Evac Lifeteam is active this evening. You can tune in at 159.900 MHz on your scanner radio.

04-12-2024 - The City of Wichita Falls Cadweb WFPD dispatch page is causing my Bitdefender to throw up an "untrusted security certificate" warning.

04-12-2024 - Burkburnett ham WA5RR is up in Oklahoma operating out of the Hackberry Flat Wildlife Management Area for the Parks on the Air® program. I can see him on the POTA spotter page but I can't hear him. He's too far away for a dependable ground wave and too close for a sky wave (skip). I doubt either of us is running much power. Maybe conditions will improve. I see that a station in Alaska is on the air from a park, but I can't hear that one either.

04-12-2024 - From my corrections consultant - It was not uncommon to see a Correctional Officer show up for work DWI. Not the drunk kind of DWI, but the "Dressing Without an Iron" DWI. The "shot with the wrinkle gun" look. About one such officer, I remarked that he looked like he slept in his car that night. As it turned out, he did. He had been kicked out of the house for some reason or another. His appearance was right up there with the Allred "Boss" I saw at Walmart, in uniform and wearing a do-rag, or du-rag, or whatever it's called, on his head. Tune in to the Allred Unit at 153.815 MHz on your scanner radio.

04-12-2024 - I have the scanner radio going, of course, but in the headphones, a CW (Morse code) conversation is happening on the 40-meter Amateur (ham) Radio band. I'm on my second cup of Folgers Black Silk coffee, by the way.

04-12-2024 - Good Morning! It's 5:30 AM and that means it's coffee and scanner radio time. Here's the main lineup: Amateur (ham) Radio (146.520, 147.140, 146.940. and 146.800 MHz), Walmart (154.570 MHz), Allred Unit (153.815 MHz), the County Jail (155.520 MHz), Courthouse Security (155.595 MHz), State Hospital (154.800 MHz) city transit buses (453.5375 MHz), school buses (152.360 MHz), school handheld radios (151.940 MHz), Air Evac Lifeteam (159.900 MHz), BNSF Railroad (160.920 MHz), Kickapoo Airport (122.700 MHz), and Wichita Valley Airpport (122.800 MHz). Tune in with your scanner radio.

04-12-2024 - NWS Forecast - Today: Sunny, with a high near 81. South wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 11 to 16 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 24 mph. Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 58. South wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.
