04-17-2024 - From my law enforcement consultant - A local bank called police when several men at the drive-thru tried to cash a $700 check from an elderly woman under suspicious circumstances. When questioned, the men said the check was for work done on the woman's house foundation. Police checked with the woman at her home. She told police the men, who claimed to make foundation repairs, noticed defects in her foundation. It was a pier and beam foundation. She hired them to make repairs. Police, looking into the crawl space, could see that a half-dozen cheap wooden shims had been hammered into various places. That was the extent of the repair. The woman thanked the bank and the police for investigating. She was happy to get the check back but did not want to pursue civil or criminal action.

04-17-2023 - I haven't seen any activity at the former Hawk Ridge golf course in the last few months. The buildings have been demolished, and there is a "For Sale" sign on the property. Not far away, work on the new RV park at Loop 11 (the loop that doesn't loop) and U.S. 287 seems to be going smoothly. There are now three buildings on the property. Surely this will bring a boost in Amateur (ham) Radio VHF simplex activity in that area!

Tune in with your scanner radio.

04-16-2024 - If I were the king and supreme ruler of a storm spotter group, I would order the group to conduct a fund-raising event once or twice a year. A car wash might be a good idea. The proceeds of the event would be distributed among the participating spotters to be used to offset vehicle wear and tear (maintenance) and fuel costs connected with spotter activities. Funds could also be used to purchase radios and other spotter-related gear.

04-16-2024 - Good Morning! I've tuned in to the 1947 KHz group (Amateur [ham] Radio) for a few months. I think I've gleaned all the useful information possible there, so it's time to find a new morning monitoring source. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready, so I'll focus on that for now.

04-15-2024 - I checked on the guys who usually inhabit CB Radio Channel 23 starting at 5:30 PM. Not finding them, I departed the frequency. I checked back at 6:45 PM and they were there. They probably showed up right after I left at about 5:40 PM or so.

04-15-2024 - At 12:30 PM, someone is giving a weather update on the Wichita Falls 146.940 MHz repeater, but I can barely hear him. Several hams acknowledged the update, so maybe I'm the only one who can't hear him.
