06-17-2024 - An unidentified station is transmitting APRS data over the 146.940 MHz repeater. Someone attempted to slap their wrists, but it didn't do any good. This is the repeater used by the Wichita Falls area Skywarn® storm spotters. Oh well, I don't use repeaters so I'm not going to get wound up about it.
06-17-2024 - I made contact with KW4NJA at Watson Mill Bridge State Park (US-2207) in Georgia on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

06-17-2024 - Good Morning! According to local news reports, the Japan House restaurant is coming to the old El Fenix building at Call Field and Rhea Road. I saw "All You Can Eat" on the sign, but was disappointed to learn that they will not have a buffet. They will bring you unlimited amounts of certain types of appetizers and similar foods. Since I don't know anything about Japanese food, I was hoping for the buffet so I could pick out items that looked good. Ordering from a menu might be risky. My coffee is ready!
06-16-2024 - There was a very interesting conversation on 160.920 MHz this afternoon. This is one of the local BNSF Railroad frequencies. I won't elaborate on the content, but you can always tune in with your scanner radio.

06-16-2024 - While randomly searching for stuff to write about, I found that, between 10-07-2019 and 02-10-2000, the U.S Federal Communications Commission took action against 1030 Unauthorized Broadcast Stations. I didn't check the details of any of the cases.
06-16-2024 - Next weekend is Amateur (ham) Radio Field Day, a 24-hour contest disguised as a readiness exercise. Or is that a readiness exercise disguised as a contest? Who cares? If you're an Amateur (ham) Radio operator, you already know about the event. If you're not a ham, get a shortwave radio and listen to the fun. Or madness. Maybe it's mad fun! Google the Amateur Radio frequencies.

06-16-2024 - Good Morning! It's Sunday, and The Wichita Amateur Radio Society holds a weekly informal net on Sundays at 8:00 PM on the club's 147.140 MHz repeater. All licensed Amateur (ham) Radio operators are invited to check in. Scanner radio enthusiasts are also invited to listen in. My wife has a birthday coming up, and one of her gifts will be a tiny Putikeeg straight key - just like mine - coupled with a tone oscillator so she can work on her Morse code proficiency. We have no interest in high-speed CW, so no iambic paddles are needed. My Bencher paddles are collecting dust on a shelf. We're "old school" so why shouldn't our Morse code be old school? My "old school" Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready, so I'll pour a cup!
06-15-2024 - I made the trip to the Vista Mall in Lewisville, Texas, for the DFW Ham Expo Hamfest today. The most exciting part of the trip was my stops - coming and going - at the Buc-ee's in Denton. That, and my IHOP breakfast with one of my brothers. This is not the fault of the hamfest organizers. It's just that hamfests lost their magic for me years ago. My only purchase was an old Midland 13-862 CB Radio. Why? It's the same model I had when I was stationed in Germany 50 years ago. A lot of Germans and U.S. military people were on the air. You can read about that here!
