06-27-2024 - Good Morning! We missed some rain yesterday evening, but I got half the yard mowed. I'll finish up this morning. This is a good time to mention again the lack of use of the Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS) in Wichita Falls. This is a license-free, low-power (2 watts) VHF FM radio service. The good thing about MURS is that external antennas are allowed. With an outside antenna - 15 to 20 feet above the ground - you can easily talk from one side of Wichita Falls to the other. It's coffee time!
06-26-2024 - The inner roads of the new Luxury RV Park at Loop 11 - the loop that doesn't loop - and U.S. 287 are close to completion. Soon, it will be full of RVs, with the RV occupants talking on Amateur (ham) Radio!
06-26-2024 - I made contact with WB0RLJ at Heron Haven State Park (US-4010) in Nebraska on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.
06-26-2024 - It was in the "wee hours" of the morning, almost 50 years ago, at Fort Irwin in the Mojave Desert. We were playing one of those war games - Bold Eagle - or something like that. It was a time of the year when it was toasty during the day and cold at night. Normally, each soldier carried a "shelter half", designed to be mated with another soldier's "shelter half" to make one two-man pup tent. I had two such items and I was able to make a one-man, roomy pup tent. I was sound asleep in my roomy pup tent when the cold wind gusted and collapsed my tent around me. Instead of trying to re-erect it, I grabbed what I could and pulled it over me like a blanket. At that moment, I knew I would not be re-enlisting, for the second time, in the U.S. Army. Six years, seven months, and twenty-three days was all they were going to get out of me.
06-26-2024 - I once saw a woman, baby strapped to her in one of those front-mounted harnesses, spraying a wasp nest. It worked out OK, but what daredevil stunts lay ahead in this kid's future?
06-26-2024 - You know you're in Walmart when you have to "test drive" a shopping cart for a few feet before heading off into the store! I think they need a full-time shopping cart front-end wheel alignment technician at my nearest location. This same store used to sell croissants with donut glaze on them. If they start offering these again, I'll overlook the shopping cart issue!

06-26-2024 - According to news reports, Sewn Clothing Gallery in Parker Square will close its "brick and mortar" location after ten years but will continue online sales. I've never heard of Sewn Clothing Gallery. Is this a bad thing, or is it normal for a guy who buys his clothes at Walmart?
06-26-2024 - From my Allred Unit consultant - The pay for Texas Correctional Officers has risen quite a bit over the last decade. While it's not a career move for everyone, I know more than a few people who say it's the best job they've ever had. One of the best features of the job is the "four on and four off" schedule. You have decent pay and four days in a row off for road trips. Once or twice a year, you can take four vacation days, couple that with the four days off on either side of those vacation days, and boom, you've got twelve days in a row off! How many other jobs offer that, on top of those other "state" benefits?
06-26-2024 - I saw an ad for a company in the UK that rents walkie-talkie radios, accessories for walkie-talkie radios, and other types of two-way radio equipment. Their target market is "businesses, schools, local councils, charities, and private customers" in the United Kingdom. This sounds like a cracking idea to me. I wonder if we have such a service here in the USA. I'll have to check.
