07-20-2024 - Being a Saturday morning, and with afternoon temperatures nearing 100 degrees, I expect our local airports to be busy early with pilots engaged in "fun" flying, working on recency of experience, or both, and wanting to get it done before the air gets "bumpy" in the afternoon. Tune in to Kickapoo at 122.700 MHz, Wichita Valley at 122.800 MHz, and Sheppard AFB/Wichita Falls Regional Airport at 119.750 MHz.

07-20-2024 - At 6:15 AM, I see Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® stations operating out of Moraine State Park in Pennsylvania and Taunton National Wild and Scenic River in Massachusetts, but I can't hear a single dot or dash from either of them. The 20-meter (14 MHz) path between those spots and Wichita Falls is still sleepy. I expect conditions to improve shortly.

07-20-2024 - 5:31 AM - NOAA SPACE WEATHER - Last 24 Hours - Radio Blackouts (Minor) Solar Radiation Storms (None) Geomagnetic Storms (None) - Solar Wind Speed: 362 km/sec Solar Wind Magnetic Fields: Bt 6 nT, Bz 4 nT Noon 10.7cm Radio Flux: 202 sfu.

07-20-2024 - 5:31 AM - According to Water Data for Texas, Wichita Falls water supply reservoirs are: Arrowhead: 74.2 Kemp: 100.0% Kickapoo 77.4%. The City of Wichita Falls uses the combined levels of Arrowhead and Kickapoo to determine drought stage.

07-20-2024 - 5:31 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 11,659 Megawatts.

07-20-2024 - NWS Forecast - Today: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny and hot, with a high near 97. South wind 6 to 8 mph. Tonight: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. Southeast wind 6 to 9 mph.

07-20-2024 - Good Morning! It's National Moon Day, celebrating July 20, 1969, a special day in the hearts of moon landing deniers everywhere. Here in Wichita Falls, it's Saturday, and it will be another warm day. I might visit the 8th & Austin location of the Wichita Falls Farmers Market. It all depends on how much of Joey, the Salsa Guy's salsa she has left. While I ponder all this, I'll pour my first cup of Folgers Black Silk coffee and see what's happening on the 40-meter Amateur (ham) Radio band.

07-19-2024 - I hear a scratchy Amateur (ham) Radio station in Wise County on 146.520 MHz FM simplex. Someone runs a simplex net in Wise, or a nearby county, on Friday evenings. Tune in with your scanner radio. If you're in Wichita Falls, you'll need a good outside antenna to hear this net.

07-19-2024 - I made contact with N4IN at My Old Kentucky Home State Park (US-1267) in Kentucky on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

07-19-2024 - I made contact with AE4GS at Sycamore Shoals State Park (US-2979) in Tennessee on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

07-19-2024 - I have an idea for a new Wichita Falls tagline or slogan. Instead of "Blue Skies. Golden Opportunities.", how about Hobby Radio Capital USA? Think about it. How does "Blue Skies. Golden Opportunities." identify Wichita Falls? How does it set up apart from any other city? What city doesn't have its share of blue skies? What city our size won't say it has golden opportunities? Tyler is the Rose Capital of Texas. Forney is the Antique Capital. I used to think we could be the Chain Restaurant Capital of Texas. Now, I think it should be Hobby Radio Capital USA!

07-19-2024 - Let it be known and let it be written that clownfoolery just happened on the business bands in Wichita Falls. What company? You'll have to get a scanner radio and find out for yourself! It's cheap entertainment. Back in the 1980s and 90s, it seemed like everybody had a scanner. It now appears that no one has a scanner, and the possibility of scanner ownership is the farthest thing from the minds of people talking on various business band frequencies in town.

07-19-2024 - 5:53 AM - Our local Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter just passed overhead, presumably on a mission. You can tune in to their company communications at 159.900 MHz on your scanner radio.

07-19-2024 - NWS Forecast - Today: Sunny, with a high near 93. Calm wind becoming east northeast around 6 mph in the afternoon. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 72. East wind around 7 mph.
