08-02-2024 - In local news, another pastor - not the one wanting a new trial - wants a reduction in his sex-crime-related bond. A mother was arrested following her kid's positive tests for methamphetamine. A fentanyl-related murder conviction is being challenged on appeal. And it's going to be hot today!

08-02-2024 - From my Allred Unit consultant - This is a miserable time of the year to be at the Allred Unit, and this goes for employees and offenders. Air conditioning for the General Population buildings is supposed to be happening, but the actual date is unknown. The gun towers are like little ovens, and the small air conditioners barely keep up. Inside the buildings, some of which require that officers wear "thrust vests", are ovens this time of year. I've seen temperatures of over 110 degrees in the day rooms of buildings 18 and 19. These are the dorms. Everyone being miserable is not a good condition for a prison.

Morse code: the easy-to-learn foreign language.
08-02-2024 - Good Morning! According to news reports, the latest edition of Starbucks has opened at E. Central Freeway at Windthorst Road. It wasn't too long ago that there was an empty lot at the proposed location. I'll have to verify. Last night, I listened to a Morse code practice session from the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) after getting into bed. I used an old Radio Shack shortwave radio tuned to the 40-meter Amateur (ham) Radio band. Rather than random thoughts keeping me awake, decoding dots and dashes is like counting sheep. This morning, it's Folgers Black Silk coffee. And more Morse code!
08-01-2024 - The 20-meter band is dead this afternoon. That has been the usual mid-day condition for some weeks now. It's 101 degrees outside. Maybe those radio waves are being boiled off before they reach me. I'm tempted to check to see if my coaxial cable has been cut! On a different note, the After Hours Art Walk is tonight in downtown Wichita Falls. Does it always have to be on one of the hottest days of the year? I went one year, burned to a crisp, and decided to retire from art-walking. In other local news, the WFISD will unveil six new "activity" buses. The new buses will be blue and feature the images of school kids on the sides. Cool! Tune in to WFISD school buses at 152.360 MHz on your scanner radio. It's cheap entertainment! Also, the City will buy that "derelict" hotel by the waterfalls and knock it down. And the pastor recently convicted of a sex crime wants a new trial.
08-01-2024 - Following our friend's medical appointment that I mentioned below, we all had breakfast at IHOP on Southwest Parkway - our six lane Farm to Market Road that doesn't lead to a Farmers Market. This is a good time to mention Loop 11, the loop that doesn't display even a hint of looping.
08-01-2024 - From the U.S. Federal Communications Commission - IN THE MATTER OF JOHNNY PERALTA. 08-01-2024 - Good Morning! I'm up early this morning. If you can't sleep, get up and get on the computer! August is here, and that means we're closer to the end of Summer. All we have to do is suffer through another month of broiling temperatures. I made no Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® stations yesterday. Today, we have to take a friend to a medical appointment. I might make a contact or two later today. At the moment, I'm in the listening mode as I scribble on this page. Have you seen the Native American totem at 5th and Scott? He's been standing there for decades and needs an overhaul. Over thirty years ago, someone shot him with an arrow. Right now, I'll pour a shot of coffee!
