08-08-2024 - Good Morning! In the news, the City of Wichita Falls will give $1.3 million to the YMCA toward the construction of an aquatic center at the Bill Bartley branch. I'm not sure how this benefits all citizens. The last time I checked, YMCA membership fees were a little on the steep side. We finally have a small (30%) chance of rain tonight. I am not optimistic. The City has been discussing whether residential concrete streets should be 5 inches or 6 inches thick. That's interesting. My street is asphalt. Wichita Falls is supposed to get a Winco Supermarket. The latest word is that Winco will build and occupy an 84,000 foot building just west of the U-Haul business on Kell Blvd East. According to the report, Winco specializes in bulk food sales. In other news, an armed suspect robbed the McDonald's on Enterprise just after closing. An unspecified amount of money was taken. My coffee is ready!
08-07-2024 - Headline seen online: "Too many DC Metro trains run by drunk drivers." Is there an acceptable number of drunk drivers?
08-07-2024 - I made contact with WE9O at Big Foot Beach State Park (US-1440) in Wisconsin on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

08-07-2024 - In the news - The Wichita Falls City Council has approved $2 million for the new MSU Student Success and Military Education Center. The Wichita Falls Police Department has formed a new team to respond to mental health calls. A man, finding his wife and her boyfriend at a local theater, was shot in the leg by the boyfriend. Conoco Park, a patch of land where Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard meets Old Burkburnett Road, will become a dog park. I made local 2-meter Amateur (ham) Radio contacts from Conoco Park and other parks a few years ago. Parking might be an issue, depending on who owns the land just west of the park. I don't know if that area is part of the park or private property. Maybe the park edges will be converted to parking spaces. I made local 2-meter Amateur (ham) Radio contacts from Conoco Park and other parks a few years ago.

08-07-2024 - Good Morning! I was thinking about Mount Murphy in Lake Wichita Park and my earlier posts about operating Amateur (ham) Radio from atop it. There's no reason to let Ham Radio Operators have all the fun! Those using Family Radio Services (FRS), General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS), Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS), Citizens Band Radio Service (CBRS or CB Radio), and even scanner radio enthusiasts can take advantage of the extra altitude and nice view of the city. Imagine what you might hear on your scanner radio with a small, commercial, or homemade handheld ground plane antenna. Think about it while I enjoy my first cup of Folgers Black Silk coffee.
08-06-2024 - I made contact with K5AYO at Peninsula State Park (US-1470) in Wisconsin on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.
08-06-2024 - In the news - Local TV station KFDX - Channel 3 - is expanding its six-o'clock news to one hour. I haven't watched TV news in 40 years. Now, I'm not going to watch it even more! We now have six reported cases of West Nile Virus. Also, more mosquitoes have tested positive for WNV. The Texas back-to-school tax holiday runs from this Friday to Sunday. The City Council has approved $60,000 for the beautification of Bridwell Park.
08-06-2024 - According to the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® spotter page, Alaska is on the air at the Worthington Glacier State Recreation Site. I know this is true because all I hear is silence! Alaska and Hawaii are being very elusive and will probably remain so. As mentioned, park operations usually involve relatively low power and simple antennas. Couple that with my ground plane antenna, and chances of a park contact with these two states might be slim to none. But I'll keep listening! No, I'll never own another Yagi (beam) antenna, and I've never owned an amplifier. Where's the sport in that?
08-06-2024 - If you like trains, the BNSF radio frequency 160.920 MHz is very active in Wichita Falls. All you need is an inexpensive scanner radio to tune in.
