09-26-2024 - 5:10 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 9,896 Megawatts.
09-26-2024 - Good Morning. Last night, I fell asleep to Morse code on the 40-meter Amateur (ham) Radio band thanks to my 25 year-old bedside Radio Shack DX-394 receiver. I had also been reading random pages of "The Complete DX'er" by Bob Locher, W9KNI. This morning, it's back to listening to 40-meter CW while I update this journal and sip some Folgers Black Silk coffee!
09-25-2024 - Today I received the SOTAbeams Carbon-6 Compact Ultra-Light Telescopic Mast (17" to 19' 6"). It's designed to support simple wire antennas. I'll be using it in local city parks for some Amateur (ham) Radio CW (Morse code) contacts. I'm just waiting for the weather to cool down a few more degrees!
09-25-2024 - Someone on X, (Twitter) mentioned seeing an old Icom 720 Amateur (ham) Radio transceiver in the High Potential series opener. He said the radio was used in a police capacity to broadcast a message to officers.
09-25-2024 - I saw my second Tesla Cybertruck in Wichita Falls today. Maybe it was the same one I saw a month ago. Either way, my eyes had barely recovered from the first sighting.
09-25-2024 - The North Texas State Hospital in Wichita Falls will begin the construction of new buildings, with planned completion in 2027. Listen to their daily operations at 154.800 MHz on your scanner radio. The State Hospital is on the south side of town, and I'm on the north side. I hear them fine on my outside antenna, the base of which is 17 feet off the ground. They're very "scratchy" on my attic-mounted discone antenna.

09-25-2024 - Good Morning! I had an idea about why so many new Wichita Falls businesses close after a year or two. Could it be that Wichita Falls is just big enough to attract certain businesses but not big enough to sustain them? If we had a larger population, some of these businesses might survive. On the other hand, if we were much smaller, many of these businesses wouldn't open at all. Which is the better condition? Does this make sense? My coffee is ready.
