10-16-2024 - 5:45 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 9,039 Megawatts.
10-16-2024 - Good Morning! There's not much on the schedule for today. I think a trip to Natural Grocers is the only thing on the list. The two-meter simplex frequency of 146.520 MHz was busy last evening. This frequency is the national two-meter calling frequency. YOu seek out other stations on the calling frequency, then move to another frequency for the actual conversation. However, it has become the local practice to remain on that frequency and yield if someone else wants to use it to make a call. This practice has worked fine in Wichita Falls for as long as I can remember. Some, myself included, will periodically announce that if anyone wants to use the frequency, speak up, and it's yours. The designation of 146.520 MHz as a calling frequency is not an FCC rule but a nationally recognized convention. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is signaling me on the national coffee calling frequency.
10-15-2024 - It's 8:00 PM, and the Clay County (Henrietta) Amateur Radio Club weekly practice net is on the air. Check in or listen on the 146.800 MHz repeater.
10-15-2024 - I didn't find out about the comet until this morning and we might have too much cloud cover to see it tonight. Maybe tomorrow, but it gets dimmer every day. Oh well, I saw Hale-Bopp, but I missed Halley's.
10-15-2024 - According to a social media post by Ben Coker, Wichita Falls Dallas Mavericks fans will be able to watch 68 Mavericks games on Channel 35 (over-the-air TV) this season.
10-15-2024 - I made contact with KD4O at Shenandoah National Park (US-0064) in Virginia on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.
10-15-2024 - I made contact with WI5D at Humphrey Access State Conservation Area (US-11226) in Missouri on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.
10-15-2024 - According to a story in the Times Record News, the WFISD Police Chief, Anthony Smith, has been appointed fourth vice president of the Texas School District Police Chiefs Association. What puzzles me is why I didn't know that Smith has been the WFISD chief for two years! When it comes to a law enforcement officer, maybe no news is good news!

10-15-2024 - 5:50 AM - Good Morning! There was not a lot of chatter on the local Amateur (ham) Radio frequencies yesterday. I heard two short conversations on the 147.140 MHz repeater and nothing on the simplex frequency of 146.520 MHz. I could have made a call there, but I didn't. I made one Parks on the Air® contact yesterday, but the 20-meter band, which I normally monitor, seemed flat for most of the day. Now, on the 40-meter band, I hear a Canadian station calling CQ (looking for any station) on CW (Morse code). Someone answered him already! There was a comet seen across the U.S. last night and I didn't know anything about it until this morning! How could this happen to me? A Google search tells me it will be visible again tonight! My Folgers Black Silk Coffee is ready!
