09-28-2023 - I'm hearing that one-sided conversation again on 151.880 MHz, a MURS frequency. The signal is fluttering a little, indicating to me that this person is using a handheld radio. This, of course, means the other station is close to him, but still just out of range for me. This might call for a cruise of the neighborhood to see who's who and what's what!

09-28-2023 - Good morning! It's coffee time again! I've got the CB Radio on Channel 19 and the Koch Morse Trainer running in the background at 20 words per minute. With the exception of two local truckers talking, the CB band is quite dead! That will change as the morning wears on.

09-27-2023 - Local news reports that the North Texas State Hospital in Wichita Falls will be demolished and and a new facility built. I don't know what will happen to the residents during that period. The State Hospital is very active on 154.800 MHz. Tune in with your scanner.

09-27-2023 - From my corrections consultant - At 13-building, on a visitation day, a visitor asked a Correctional Officer, "Can I use your restroom?" The officer responded, "You're a taxpayer, that's your restroom!" The visitor seemed stunned for a second, apparently not used to hearing this type of talk from a public employee, but recovered and went to the restroom. Listen to Allred operations on your scanner at 153.815 MHz.

09-27-2023 - The worst on-the-air assault I ever witnessed came not from CB Radio as some might expect, but from Amateur (ham) Radio. It happened in 2017 on the simplex frequency of 146.520 MHz. For reasons unknown, one operator went "up one side and down the other" of another operator with F-bombs, N-bombs, SOBs, and threats of physical assault. I recorded it all but I'll keep it to myself out of respect for the victim. What got the suspect arrested was the threatening phone call he made to the victim. No need for FCC intervention. That was a state penal code violation. The suspect died not long after the incident. I believe an illness affected his brain.

09-27-2023 - I got my Morse code work in for this morning, and I'll hit it again in a few hours. Now, I'll spin the dial on the CB Radio and see what's happening there. I also have the scanner on now, checking out Walmart, the Allred Unit, school buses, and more!

09-27-2023 - I'm still on the 40-meter band and I hear W1AW/7 working stations in Morse code. W1AW is the call sign of the American Radio Relay League station in Newington, CT. W1AW/7 is the call sign of the Montana Reservations and is part of the ARRL Volunteers on the Air program. Stations are allowed to use the ARRL call sign under certain circumstances. Montana is in the "7" call sign area. Have I confused you yet?

09-27-2023 - Good morning! It's coffee time, accompanied by some CW on the 40-meter Ham Radio band. I have to be sure some non-hams know that CW stands for "continuous wave" and generally means Morse code, not Country & Western. I don't want to have line dancing break out! Anyway, there seems to be a small pile-up in progress with multiple stations trying to get the attention of a DX (foreign) station that I can barely hear. That's okay since the goal is simply to listen to Morse code while I enjoy my first cup of coffee.

09-26-2023 - The phone number for a taxi in Wichita Falls has been 723-0723 for 57 years that I know of. There's no telling how long that condition existed before then. Also, there was only one cab company in town for many years. Maybe I'll check an old city directory to see how long that phone number reached the cab company. The radio system was duplex, transmitting on one frequency and receiving on another. The drivers could not hear each other and, therefore could not talk to each other. I guess they had a reason for doing it that way.
