10-01-2023 - Our local Air Evac Lifeteam is active this afternoon. Tune in Air Evac Lifeteam at 159.900 MHz on your scanner.
10-01-2023 - With the forecasted high being 73 degrees for Saturday in Wichita Falls, I predict that local pilots will be out in force, taking advantage of that cool, smooth air!
10-01-2023 - The MURS/GMRS frequency of 462.5625 is active at the moment. The signal is weak and it's hard to tell what's being discussed. I think I mentioned before that some "wardriving" on my part might be necessary to locate them. I'm sure it's some type of business nearby.
10-01-2023 - You haven't lived until you've walked into the web of one of those huge yellow and black Argiope "writing" spiders. It sounds like fabric ripping. Or, maybe that's what your brain tells you as you hit the ground screaming and trying to get it off of you. The fact that the spider took off upward into the tree makes no difference. The "writing" spiders are the kind that put that zig zag pattern in the center of the web.
10-01-2023 - It's Sunday, so the contests are still happening on Ham Radio. I'm hearing signal reports flying back and forth on 14.060 MHz. This is informally a QRP (low power) frequency, but some of these stations are definitely not QRP. It's like DX'ers (skip shooters) on CB Radio tearing up Channel 19 instead of reserving it for truckers. It is what it is.
10-01-2023 - Were you around for the "gas wars" of 1970? I remember filling up my motorcycle for a quarter at the now-demolished TNT station on Old Iowa Park Road at Harlan Ave. In front of this station was a sign - GAS WAR - 19¢! Similar signs could be seen around town. Things would change drastically in 1973 with gas shortages and long lines at stations.
10-01-2023 - The CB Radio DX channels are very active this morning. On the Ham Radio, contests, special events stations, nets, and plain "rag chewing" will occupy the bands today. Locally, the usual suspects are active on the scanner - Allred Unit at 153.815 MHz, Walmart at 154.570 MHz, and the County Jail at 155.520 MHz.

10-01-2023 - It's the first day of October, and it's coffee time. I noticed that a high temperature of 73 degrees is the current forecast for Saturday in Wichita Falls. Can this be true?
09-30-2023 - On CB Radio Channel 19, truckers were sounding the alarm on a WFPD motorcycle officer on the northside freeway. One trucker chimed in with "He better not mess with me cuz I've got a sack of donuts, and I'm not afraid to use "em."

09-23-2023 - There is activity on the 147.140 MHz repeater this afternoon. There's also a lot of CW (Morse code) activity on the 20-meter Ham Radio band. Which do I listen to? Both!
09-23-2023 - If you're a CB Radio operator, you know about the existence of the "superbowl", the name given to Channel 6 which is inhabited by high-power, big gun stations. Wichita Falls has a small but active group on "da bowl". Tune in, if you dare!
09-30-2023 - I stopped by the "Behind the Downtown YMCA" branch of the Farmer's Market and picked up some salsa from The Salsa Guy (Joey). I recharge my supply about every two weeks. It's good stuff!
09-30-2023 - About a dozen years ago, a female civilian employee at the James V. Allred Unit rode head-first through the x-ray scanner in 13-building. Is there a statute of limitations on OSHA violations? Tune in to Allred operations on your scanner at 153.815 MHz.
09-30-2023 - Wichita Falls needs more blogs and journals. We already have enough Facebook content donors. Confusing Facebook with a blog or journal isn't all bad. Zuckerberg, and his investors, love you and cash in on every word you donate! Sadly, they won't give you so much as a pat on the head or a dog biscuit for your contributions.
09-30-2023 - The Wichita Falls Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter just passed by. Tune in to their Wichita Falls operations at 159.900 MHz on your scanner.
09-29-2023 - There's not much in the way of CW (Morse code) on the 20-meter ham band this evening. The only code I hear at the moment is the regular ARRL code practice session at 14.047.50 MHz. It sounds like a 20-word per-minute session. I'll take it! Wait, a Cuban station just started calling CQ down the band at 14.025 MHz and someone, who I can barely hear, is answering.
09-30-2023 - Good morning! It's coffee and radio time again. The 20-meter CW band is flat this morning, but Channel 38 LSB on the CB Radio is alive and well. I'll check 20 meters later.
09-29-2023 - The Evening Crew have appeared, on schedule (1730), on CB Radio Channel 23. It sounds like they may be a little light on participation tonight. I haven't done much CB Radio listening today.
09-29-2023 - I went to bed early - 2100 - last night and popped awake at 0230. It's back on the radio, and I hear XE2HQI (Mexico) calling CQ DX at about 35 words per minute on 7.014 MHz. Someone is tuning up right on top of him. I'll give the tuner-upper the benefit of the doubt and assume that he doesn't hear XE2HQI. I'm not really DX for an XE2 station. I'm sure he's worked Texas before. Further down at 7.007 MHz, I hear KP4Y calling CQ DX at about 40 words per minute. Too fast for me. It took me three tries to get his call sign alone. Anyway, I'm not DX for him. There's a signal way down in the noise at 7.011 MHz. I'll leave it there and move on.
