10-25-2023 - Good Morning, once again! I slept late (0730) this morning and the school buses (152.360 MHz) are almost finished with their morning runs. The Allred Unit (153.815 MHz), however, will be running all day! You might hear the Allred Unit repeater identify itself (WPFM 920) occasionally in Morse code. And the Texas Rangers will battle the Arizona Diamondbacks in the World Series.

10-24-2023 - According to Texoma's Home Page (KFDX, CH 3), Denny's on Kemp might be closing, and a restaurant with Hawaiian cuisine might be taking its place. I say bring your Hawaiian cuisine but put it in another building. Leave Denny's alone. Denny's wants to stay. I can feel it.

10-24-2023 - It's 2000 hrs and the Clay County Amateur Radio Club Skywarn Practice Net is on the air at 146.800 MHz. If you're in Wichita Falls, your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to turn on your scanner radio and listen in. Of course, if you're a ham, you can check in!

10-24-2023 - The 147.140 MHz repeater has been quite active the last few days. A couple of local hams are on as I write this. This is the Wichita Amateur Radio Society repeater and is used on the Sunday night - 2000 hrs - informal net. Tune in with your scanner.

10-24-2023 - This morning I heard a local Amateur (ham) Radio Operator throw out his call sign. My radio is on "scan" and by the time I looked at it, it had returned to the scanning mode. There was no automatic (Morse code) repeater ID" so I don't know if he was on a repeater or simplex. It would be nice if he had identified the frequency on his first transmission. He might be relatively new.

10-24-2023 - Good Morning. I woke up to a light rain and I'm hoping we got a lot of it overnight. It's coffee time and the WFISD school buses (152.360 MHz), and the City transit buses (453.5375 MHz) are about to start their morning run. They can both be very entertaining and you can tune in to it all with your scanner.

10-23-2023 - Astronaut and Amateur (ham) Radio Operator Jasmine Moghbeli (KI5WSL) currently aboard the International Space Station, is scheduled to make radio contact with students at A. L. Burruss Elementary School, Marietta, GA, (KK4RGK) on Tue 2023-10-24 16:14:50 UTC (11:14 AM). You can hear the ISS side of the contact on 145.800 MHz on your scanner if you're within the radio footprint of the ISS.

10-23-2023 - I heard a couple of the local guys on CB Radio Channel 23 this evening. I'm just guessing that they started at the customary 1730 hrs. I didn't hang around long since I had things to get done before the Texas Rangers - Houston Astros ALCS Game 7!

10-23-2023 - Back in the mid-1960s, the building at 6th and Lamar that is now or was formerly the Atrium Building, was the home of Longhorn Chevrolet. Cars were inside the building and outside on the lot behind the building. Into the early 1980s, the building that formerly housed the Continental Trailways bus station at 7th and Lamar still had a "Colored" sign at one of the back doors.

10-23-2023 - Construction continues on the Hampton Inn, on the south side of the Cracker Barrel, and the RV park, just across the street. These are good locations for both businesses since there is shopping and dining within walking distance.

10-23-2023 - Good Morning once more! Yes, it's Folgers Black Silk as usual, code practice (listen only) is in session on the 80 meter Amateur (ham) Radio band, and the Texas Rangers have forced Game 7 of the ALCS playoffs. Let's see what the rest of the day brings.

10-22-2023 - The Wichita Amateur Radio Society conducted its weekly informal net on the club's 147.140 MHz repeater. I don't know how many check-ins they had as I was occupied with the Rangers-Astros game. Tune in with your scanner or get your Amateur (ham) Radio license and join in.

10-22-2023 - If you remember when the Kaman Huskie helicopter was a regular sight above Sheppard Air Force Base, you've been around for more than a few years! They were used for firefighting and rescue.

10-22-2023 - The 147.140 MHz repeater (Wichita Amateur Radio Society) has been quite active lately with local "rag chewing" going on. Tune in with your scanner or get your Amateur (ham) Radio license and join in.

10-22-2023 - From my law enforcement consultant: Headline - "Former WFPD officer involved in standoffs sentenced." If you've read the story, you might wonder how he slipped through the pre-employment psych evaluation. Then there was the time an officer turned in a burglary report with the curious observation that the burglar went through the victim's "chester drawers." In another incident, a Field Training Officer wrote, in his evaluation of a recruit officer, that the officer "missed spelled" quite a few words. The takeaway: The WFPD hires from the human race just like any other company. You're never sure exactly what you're going to get.

10-22-2023 - Good Morning! It's coffee time once more. I'm not finding much in the way of Morse code on the HF bands this morning. I think 80 meters is trying to close up a little, and 20 meters is still sleepy. Things will improve later. On the CB Radio the usual DX channels are coming alive. It's Sunday, so there probably won't be much trucking traffic on Channel 19. I feel sorry for the truckers who deal with DXers who won't stay off 19. They probably won't get relief until the current solar cycle bottoms out. Maybe there will be a trucking shift to VHF or UHF by then. And, the Rangers will be fighting for their ALCS lives tonight!

10-21-2023 - It was around 1968 to 1970 at the Wichita Theater on Indiana Ave. I don't know what movie was showing, but it must have been terrible for the times because a cop was out in front checking IDs.

10-21-2023 - Good Morning again! I was up for about an hour earlier, but went back to bed. Now it's 0730 and coffee time for real. I got enough Morse code earlier, so I'm listening on the CB Radio and the scanner. I'm using the Ringo Ranger II VHF antenna on my new Yaesu FTM-3100 and one of the attic-mounted discone antennas for the scanner. I'll put the dual-band (VHF-UHF) J-Pole antenna, that's been collecting dust, on the tower in a week or so. I'll need more coaxial cable before I can do that. So, today, the scanner is limited on its receive range. The CB Radio is starting to come alive as the band creeps open.

10-21-2023 - Good Morning! I couldn't sleep so I'm on the Ham Radio at 0130. I'm listening to two guys on 80 meters (or 75 phone, as some call the voice portion of the band) and they both have the "roger" complex pretty bad. One guy ends each sentence or two with a "roger" posed as a question. It's like talking to someone face to face and after each sentence adding a "Did you get that?" The other guy responds to each "roger?" with a "roger roger." It's a little comical because these are short exchanges so there are plenty of "rogers" going back and forth. I'm just having a little fun here. It's all good! I think I'll search out some Morse code. No coffee or I'll never get back to sleep.
