11-02-2023 - At 605 E. Scott, at the intersection of E. Scott & Galveston, was the Hi Boy Drive-In restaurant. Records show that the owner was Mrs. Dora Davis. This is the same Dora Davis who was once Wichita County Clerk.
11-02-2023 - Our city transit bus drivers (453.5375 MHz) are a little subdued this morning. They're usually a bit chatty in the early morning before "adult supervision" arrives at work. Tune in with your scanner!
11-02-2023 - Today is National Doge Day, All Souls Day, National Cash Back Day, National Ohio Day, National Men Make Dinner Day, National Broadcast Traffic Professional's Day, and National Deviled Egg Day.
11-02-2023 - Today, the UK celebrates 42 years of "legal" CB Radio. Although CB Radio was already in use, it wasn't legalized until 1981. Damn bootleggers! LOL!
11-02-2023 - From my corrections consultant - It wasn't the Superbowl, but I'm sure a lot of "soups" (ramen noodles) were won and lost at the Allred Unit last night over the World Series. Will all of the losers pay up, or will we see a few offenders pulling disciplinary stunts to get them off their building and into the relative safety of the Pre-Hearing Detention building? Offenders have been known to assault Correctional Officers just to get off a building where they have incurred a debt they can't pay. By the way, this is called "catching out", which also means hopping a freight train out of town. I can see how it was adapted for prison life
11-02-2023 - Good Morning! It's coffee time and the Texas Rangers won their first World Series championship in franchise history. I'm not the world's biggest sports fan, but I think this is exciting. Now, our local Walmart stores don't have to put away all those Texas Rangers shirts that have been on display. I might even buy a couple. Or, maybe I'll wait for the updated "champions" version.
11-01-2023 - From the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics - In August 2023, job openings rates were above 7.0 percent in Alaska (10.6 percent), as well as in South Carolina, Utah, and West Virginia (7.1 percent each). Among these states, the number of job openings ranged from 39,000 in Alaska to 175,000 in South Carolina. Nationally, there were 9,610,000 job openings in August, and the U.S. job openings rate was 5.8 percent.
11-01-2023 - From my law enforcement consultant - It was around 1996, on a Winter Sunday morning, when the wet Wichita Falls streets suddenly turned to ice. WFPD officers worked just over 100 accidents before noon. Even the Chief had a fender-bender when he ventured out for a look. It took several days to get all of those accident reports completed.
11-01-2023 - I hear traffic on the Iowa Park school bus frequency - 153.305 MHz - this morning. Either they don't talk a lot, or I'm just missing them. Either way, it's in the rotation on my scanner.

11-01-2023 - Today is Prime Meridian Day, Day of the Dead, All Saints Day, Autistics Speaking Day, National Biologic Coordinators Day*, and World Vegan Day. *Beats the heck out of me!
11-01-2023 - Not long ago, the Wichita County Sheriff's Office, including the jail, moved to a new complex on U.S. 287 between Hammon and Fisher Roads, near the east edge of the city. I wonder what the Electra Police Department thinks about the need to drive the extra distance to deliver a prisoner? Or do they hold them in Electra until a Sheriff's Department taxi is in the area?
11-01-2023 - Good Morning! It's the 1st of November, and it's time to change the filter in my AC/Furnace. But first, it's time to work on my first cup of coffee while I enjoy the heat of the fireplace video on the big screen TV! There was considerable chatter on Amateur (ham) Radio 146.520 FM simplex last night. That's always a good thing. This morning, the city transit bus frequency - 453.5375 - is alive with chatter. The school buses are coming alive on 152.360 MHz. Tune in to all of the Wichita Falls radio action on your scanner!
10-31-2023 - I'm listening to an oversized load coming through town on U.S. 287 with the "pilot cars" working on CB Radio Channel 19. Many loads of "who knows what" move through Wichita Falls.
10-31-2023 - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission, in investigating two complaint alleging that Clear Rate Communications (Clear Rate) changed Complainant’s telecommunications service provider without obtaining authorization and verification from Complainant as required by the Commission’s rules, concluded that Clear Rate’s actions did violate the Commission’s slamming rules. In other FCC news, the Commission today issued a Public Notice that authorizes approximately $18.28 billion in Enhanced Alternative Connect America Cost Model (Enhanced A-CAM) support for carriers that have accepted the offer of Enhanced A-CAM support in the states identified in today’s Authorization Report for a 15-year period beginning January 1, 2024. Collectively, these companies are committing to deploy broadband service of at least 100/20 Mbps service to over 700,000 locations and to maintain or improve existing 100/20 Mbps service to approximately 2 million locations in 44 states across the U.S.
10-31-2023 - When it comes to local Amateur (ham) Radio communications, Wichita Falls is pretty much a "repeater" town. Repeaters are easy, they "work every time*", and radio operators seem to end up using them. But, every few years, VHF simplex communications (direct communications without a repeater) will enjoy a spell of popularity that might last for months at a time. During these peaks of simplex operation, I refer to the participants as the Sultans of Simplex. These sultans should not be confused with that CB Radio operator on the west coast whom I refer to as the Sultan of Splatter. *If you can't communicate by repeater in Wichita Falls, you need a new radio, or an actual antenna for that radio.
10-31-2023 - Local trucker chatter is picking up on CB Radio Channel 19. A lot of loads are hauled out of the plastic pipe manufacturer on Old Iowa Park Road. If you don't want a CB Radio, most modern scanner radios will tune down to the 27 MHz CB Radio frequencies. Most antennas used for scanner radios won't be very efficient at CB frequencies, but you should be able to monitor local comms.
10-31-2023 - From my corrections consultant - Between my two tours of duty at the Allred Unit, I worked at the Wichita County Jail for 6 months. I wanted to say I worked in the Criminal Justice system at the city, county, state, and federal levels, and working at the county would take care of that. At the "Sprague" annex, we had 4 or 5 new arrivals lined up, trading their civilian clothes for a jailhouse uniform, and receiving a rules briefing. I noticed one man had a "Vietnam Veteran" hat. I asked him if he was indeed a Vietnam vet and he replied that he was. I said "Thank you for your service to our country." He looked stunned for a second, and then said "Thank you." I have no doubt that he wasn't ready for such a comment from someone processing him into the Annex. Tune in to Wichita County jail operations at 155.520 MHz on your scanner.

10-31-2023 - Good Morning! It's coffee time and time to tell you that the new All American Car Wash at I-44 and Airport Drive (across the highway from Walmart) is about to open. There's a "Hiring Now" sign out front. I think I went to a car wash about 15 years ago. I'm a hand wash guy and I wash my car about three times a year whether it needs it or not!
