11-05-2023 - Good Morning! From my corrections consultant - It's another visitation day at the James V. Allred Unit. You can tell if you're tuned in to 153.815 MHz. People who drop off visitors are invited to park in the gravel parking lot by the Highway Gate. When a visitor is ready to leave, you'll hear a call for the Roving Patrol Officer to notify the driver of the proper vehicle to go to 13-Building to retrieve them.
11-04-2023 - One of the more interesting parts of Wichita Falls life was reading "The Shopper". This was a small weekly advertising "newspaper" tossed in front yards all over town. The main office was located at 2200 Seymour Highway at Sunset Drive. They ceased publication, with the last issue being printed on December 28, 2001. I have a copy of that one.
11-04-2023 - The Wichita Amateur Radio Society will be providing radio communications support for the annual Veteran's Day Parade in downtown Wichita Falls this morning. If you're in the area, you can listen in at 147.140 and 444.000 MHz on your scanner.
11-04-2023 - There's a Fly-In at Wichita Valley Airport in Iowa Park / Wichita Falls, and a Pumpkin Drop (bombing an old car) is about to happen! Tune in at 122.800 MHz on your scanner!
11-04-2023 - I saw rumblings on Twitter about Radio Shack re-opening. I'll go ahead and predict, as I have before, that if they try to sell what Best Buy is selling, they'll crash again! They need to go back to their "Hobby Radio" roots, with no more than five stores. Make the brick-and-mortar stores an experience worth the pilgrimage! If it works for Ham Radio Outlet, it can work for Radio Shack.
11-04-2023 - Today is National Play Outside Day, National Bison Day, National Candy Day, and National Chicken Lady Day.
11-04-2023 - It's Saturday and the local trucking traffic on CB Radio Channel 19 - 27.185 MHz - will be light. The school buses - 152.360 MHz - are off for the weekend. The County Jail - 155.520 MHz - the Allred Unit - 153.815 MHz - Walmart stores - 154.570 MHz - the State Hospital - 154.800 MHz - Kickapoo Airport - 122.700 MHZ - and Wichita Valley Airport - 122.800 MHz - will keep you entertained. There should also be random traffic on the local Amateur (ham) Radio frequencies - 146.520 and 147.140 MHz. Catch it all on your scanner.
11-03-2023 - For reasons unknown, I was reading the instructions on a tube of toothpaste. Those instructions said to squeeze out one inch of the goop onto the toothbrush. I've heard for years, from dental professionals, that all you need is a small amount of toothpaste, no bigger than a pencil eraser. The part of the eraser that you can see. Someone is trying to sell more toothpaste.
11-03-2023 - The Local Group could be heard on CB Radio Channel 23 this evening. I don't know how long they were on. Check them out at 1730 if you have a CB Radio, shortwave radio, or even a scanner radio that will receive 27 MHz. Also, someone is keying up the local Amateur (ham) Radio 444.000 MHz repeater. No voice, just keying up, or "kerchunking" as they say. There hasn't been a lot of activity on that repeater lately.
11-03-2023 - Let it be known, let it be written that while a student at Hirschi High School, I collected a total of 22 licks. Two of those were a case of mistaken identity. I did not shoot those spit wads on that particular day.

11-03-2023 - I've never been on a city bus, but I'm thinking about riding all the bus routes. I'll pick one bus at the Travel Center downtown and riding it until it returns. Days or weeks later, I'll pick another. Maybe.
11-03-2023 - From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics - In June 2023, private industry employer compensation costs averaged $55.57 per hour worked for union employees. Compensation costs for union workers in the retail trade industry averaged $27.08, including $17.22 for wages and salaries and $9.86 for benefits.
11-03-2023 - Today is National Housewife's Day, National Sandwich Day, One Health Day, World Jellyfish Day, and National Jersey Day.
11-03-2023 - In Amateur (ham) Radio, 146.580 MHz has been unofficially designated as the "adventure frequency" and is commonly used for hiking, backpacking, camping, Summits on the Air (SOTA), and similar activities. Here in Wichita Falls, that frequency sometimes sees general simplex use since we-re not really an "adventure" destination. However, you might hear stations atop Mount Scott from time to time. Plug it into your scanner.
11-03-2023 - Good Morning. It's coffee time, as usual, and I see (or hear) that our local city transit bus drivers - 453.5375 MHz - are quite chatty this morning. The local Amateur (ham) Radio club repeater - 147-140 MHz - was active a little earlier. I haven't heard anything on CB Radio Channel 19 yet.
11-02-2023 - I don't know how many times I've had to greet the Walmart greeter. I thought they were supposed to greet me. Some years ago, I complained to the greeter about the lack of hand baskets. She said I'd have to talk to management about that. I thought I was speaking to a representative of management! Tune in to Walmart operations at 154.570 and 154.600 MHz on your scanner.
11-02-2023 - Federal Trade Commission - FTC Action Leads to $18 Million in Refunds for Brigit Consumers Harmed by Deceptive Promises About -Cash Advances, Hidden Fees, and Blocked Cancellation. Complaint alleges company violated FTC Act and ROSCA with false promises targeting consumers living paycheck-to-paycheck and by failing to deliver cash advances as advertised. The Federal Trade Commission is taking action against personal finance app provider Brigit, alleging that its promises of "instant" cash advances of up to $250 for people living paycheck-to-paycheck were deceptive and that the company locked consumers into a $9.99 monthly membership they couldn't cancel.
11-02-2023 - From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics - From September 2022 to September 2023, nonfarm payroll employment increased in 36 states and was essentially unchanged in 14 states and the District of Columbia. Three states had increases of at least 3.0 percent: Nevada (+3.4 percent), Texas (+3.2 percent), and Idaho (+3.0 percent).

11-02-2023 - Years ago - maybe 20 or so - someone had a Coffee News franchise here in town. The sleek, coffee-colored publication could be found in barber and beauty shops, restaurants, and waiting rooms around town. It carried local advertising and other tidbits of information. For all its good looks, it never seemed to have any information that I found interesting. It was mostly "canned" info that probably appeared in all the issues across the country. Other than the business advertising, I don't remember it having any local information.
