11-18-2023 - The Local Group is on the air - CB Radio Channel 23 - 1730 - 1930 - as usual. Give them a shout if you have a CB Radio.

11-18-2023 - I made two contacts using the Icom 2-meter handheld radio this morning while out for a walk. One was quite distant for me having only an 18-inch rubber duck antenna. For my next pedestrian portable outing, I'll attach a simple 18- or 19-inch counterpoise wire to the base of the antenna. I did this several years ago and it boosted my transmit signal a noticeable amount. On a different note, I just heard a Walmart employee say "Copy that" on the radio. Cool! You can catch me while pedestrian portable at 146.520 MHz and Walmart at 154.570 MHz on your scanner.

11-18-2023 - This morning, I purchased two large jars of salsa from The Salsa Guy at the Wichita Falls Farmers Market (west location). I'm sort of a regular. This is good stuff! Give it a try! He's easy to find on Facebook.

11-18-2023 - During the early 1980s and into the early 1990s, monitoring the old analog cordless phones was a very popular activity. And yes, folks, back then it was legal - according to FCC regulations at the time - to monitor the "base" portion of the phone but not the handset. The interesting thing was that the base transmitted both sides of the conversation. Even the cheapest of Radio Shack scanners could intercept these calls. Of course, an outside antenna was required if you wanted to receive signals more than a block away. Let your imagination run wild as to the things people talk about on phones and that's exactly what we heard. One conversation that stands out is a man talking to a woman who is about to marry his son. There was no doubt that this man and his future daughter-in-law were more "involved" than they should be and had no plans to stop! Wild! Well, it was fun while it lasted - the phone monitoring, that is. Now it's illegal, plus modern cordless phones can't be monitored with scanners available to the public.

11-18-2023 - Good Morning! This weekend I'll be listening for a couple of Amateur (ham) Radio "special event" stations. One commemorates the 1st Transatlantic Ham Radio QSO in 1923. The station, special call sign K3S, will be operated by the Nuclear Ship Savannah Amateur Radio Club and will operate from the ship. Listen on 40, 20, 15, and 10 meters for both SSB (single sideband voice) and CW (Morse code) calls.

11-17-2023 - An Amateur (ham) Radio operator in Wise County is racking up the contacts on 146.520 and 146.580 MHz tonight. I didn't pay a lot of attention to it as I was watching the old movie "Timecop" on TV.

11-17-2023 - The Local Group is on CB Radio Channel 23 at their regular time of 1730 hours. There's not a lot of "skip" interfering with them tonight.

11-17-2023 - A couple of "hams" are chatting on 146.460 MHz as they drive through town. I have all the popular 2-meter (VHF) simplex frequencies programmed into my scanner so I don't miss much on that band.

11-17-2023 - Here's a suggestion for people in Wichita Falls (and anywhere else) using Facebook as your business website: don't require visitors to have a Facebook account to see your page. Since you have to be logged on to Facebook to create the page, you might not be aware of the restrictive setting. If you are aware of the restrictive setting, well, good luck.

11-17-2023 - Good Morning! I'm having a smaller size serving of Folgers Black Silk this morning. I think I need to cut back on the caffeine. The usual suspects are up and running: Walmart (154.570 MHz), the Allred Unit (153.815 MHz), the County Jail (155.520 MHz), the State Hospital (154.800 MHz) the city transit buses (453.5375 MHz), school handheld radios (151.940 MHz), and the school buses (152.360 MHz). There was some chatter on CB Radio Channel19 this morning as well as on the Amateur (ham) Radio 147.140 MHz repeater. Catch it all with your scanner. It's also National Take a Hike Day!

11-16-2023 - I'm hearing a very strong - full-scale - signal on 151.880 MHz this afternoon. The operator is making short transmissions. I don't hear the other station so I can't tell what they're talking about. This is a frequency in the license-free Multi-Use Radio Service. License-free means no call sign is issued and there is no requirement to identify.
