07-07-2023 - From the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics - On an average day in 2022, nearly everyone age 15 and older (95 percent) engaged in some sort of leisure and sport activity, such as watching TV, socializing, or exercising. Of those who engaged in leisure and sports activities, men spent more time in these activities (5.8 hours) than did women (5.1 hours).

07-07-2023 - The 1977 Wichita Falls City Directory lists 140 people under the heading of Clergymen. With those kind of numbers the whole town should make it into heaven!
17-07-2023 - Another fun radio scanning target was the drive-thru ordering system at our local fast-food establishments. The just after midnight on the weekends seemed to be more comical due to the lack of sobriety of some customers. While not something you'd want to sit in your car and listen to, it was enjoyable enough to listen to from the comfort of your home. Most of these companies have moved to higher frequencies and use spread spectrum technology which is beyond the capability of generic scanner radios.
07-07-2023 - I popped awake this morning at 0430, rode my exercise bike for 65 minutes, then went back to bed. Up again at 0630 for coffee and a check of the radio scanner to see who's talking about what. Nothing out of the ordinary going on there or on the CB Radio. Let's see what the rest of the day brings.
07-07-2023 - From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics - Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 209,000 in June, and the unemployment rate changed little at 3.6 percent. Employment continued to trend up in government, health care, social assistance, and construction.
07-06-2023 - From the U.S. Federal Trade Commission - An FTC lawsuit against the operators of a telemarketing scam that called hundreds of thousands of consumers nationwide pitching “extended automobile warranties” will result in a lifetime ban from any outbound telemarketing business and from any involvement with extended automobile warranty sales. The FTC first charged Kole Consulting Group and its owner, Daniel Kole, as some of the defendants running the American Vehicle Protection (AVP) operation that scammed consumers out of millions of dollars in February 2022. In its complaint, the FTC charged that AVP made unsolicited calls in which it claimed to be affiliated with vehicle makers and deceptively claimed its products, which cost thousands of dollars, offered “bumper to bumper” protection.
07-06-2023 - A decade or more ago, probably more, there was a small eatery called Matlock's on Indiana Ave across from the Wichita Falls Public Library. The owner allowed a couple of local Amateur (ham ) Radio Operators to install a small VHF-UHF antenna on the roof, with the coax cable terminating at their favorite table. We need more restaurant owners like that!
07-06-2023 - It is my belief that Allred Unit officers will not, in this life or the next, figure out what causes that terrible feedback in their portable radios and how to minimize or eliminate it.Tune in to Allred operations at 153.815 MHz.
IF YOU ENJOY MY POSTS, please make your next AMAZON purchase using THIS LINK, or any other affiliate link on this site. If you do, I will earn a small commission but it won't cost you extra. You can buy radio stuff or any stuff but, for me to earn a commission, you have to purchase within 24 hours of adding the item(s) to your shopping cart. I'm thanking you in advance because AMAZON, correctly, doesn't identify you to me.
07-06-2023 - Not long ago, I learned that "wardriving" is the act of driving around looking for unsecured WiFi connections. Back 30 - 40 years ago, wardriving was going mobile to seek out analog cordless phone calls to monitor with your Radio Shack scanner. Don't think it didn't happen!
07-06-2023 - The Hotter'N Hell Hundred bike ride is happening soon. You can listen in on all the behind-the-scenes communications provided by area Amateur (ham) Radio operators. Frequencies commonly used are 147.140, 149.940, and 444.000 MHz. I'm told that hams have provided communications for the HHH in all but one year. That one year, the HHH folks decided that they could run the operation using cell phones. They were back to Ham Radio the next year. Cell phones provide communications between two people. Ham Radio allows everyone on the network to be aware of any issues, anywhere, in real time.
07-06-2023 - The International Space Station must be nearby because I'm receiving strong Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) data bursts on 145.825 MHz. I haven't heard any Amateur (ham) Radio voice on the downlink frequency of 145.800 MHz in quite a while. Usually, those are scheduled contacts with schools. Sometimes it can be a contact with a random ham.
07-06-2023 - There's a lot of activity on 463.300 MHz. It sounds like a private trash collection company. No one has given a call sign as required by the FCC, but this is not unusual. It's also "radio check" time for our local transit buses on 453.5375 MHz. Tune in with your scanner.
07-06-2023 - There was thunderstorm activity over the City last night. Our local Amateur (ham) Radio Skywarn storm spotters were put on alert, but not activated. The thinking was that by the time they were called out and in position, the worst part of the storm would have already passed. It was not a very widespread storm system. You can listen to the storm spotters on 146.940 MHz on your scanner.
07-06-2023 - It's coffee time and also time to tune in to our City transit buses. These folks can be amusing. Tune in with your scanner at 453.5375 MHz
07-05-2023 - In the 1977 Wichita Falls City Directory, at an address in a part of town commonly referred to as the "Country Club", a person is listed as a houseboy. Interesting.
07-05-2023 - The North Texas (Wichita Falls) State Hospital is active, as usual, this evening on 154.800 MHz. Tune in to their daily operations with your scanner.
07-05-2023 - Flashback from the 1960s and 70s - McCain's Funny Farm Go Karts, 3408 Sheppard Access Road and Vaughn's Go Karts & Trampolines, 2611 Sheppard Access Road. Do you remember them? You can still see McCain's on Google Maps/Earth.
