12-29-2023 - From my law enforcement consultant - Is a dog really "Man's Best Friend"? That depends on how and where you die. A Wichita Falls man died on his backyard patio. It was summertime. No one found the man for a few days. His dog, outside with him and locked out of the house, got hungry and started chewing on the man. Police observed that several dog mouthfuls had been taken from the man. So, don't die with a dog unless that dog has plenty of dog food, and you don't plan on being undiscovered for more than a day.

12-29-2023 - In Amateur (ham) Radio, there are "Worked All States", "Worked All Continents", and many other awards to be had. Back around 1985, a local Ham Radio operator and I decided we were going to "Dine All Restaurants" in Wichita Falls. I think we made it to five or six before he passed away. Maybe I'll give it another try. And, maybe not.

12-29-2023 - Good Morning! It's 5:00 AM, 31 degrees outside, and the coffee is almost ready. The 1947 kHz crew is awake and "chewing the rag" already. Let's see what the day brings.

12-28-2023 - I'm binge-watching the "Billions" series and, after 6 seasons, I've counted 8 actors who were also in the "House of Cards" series. Interesting.

12-28-2023 - From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics - From November 2022 to November 2023, unemployment rates were lower in 20 states, higher in 15 states and the District of Columbia, and essentially unchanged in 15 states.

12-28-2023 - At 6:25 AM, the local Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter is on a mission. Listen in on your scanner at 159.900 MHz.

12-28-2023 - NWS forecast - Today: Partly sunny, with a high near 47. North northwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Tonight: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming clear, with a low around 28. North wind 6 to 9 mph becoming west after midnight.

12-28-2023 - Good Morning! It's 6:00 AM, the coffee is brewing, and I hear trash-talking on the scanner. It's that waste management company on 463.300 MHz conducting business as usual. The City buses will kick in shortly on 453.5375 MHz. The Allred Unit - 153.815 MHz - holds "count" nine times during a 24-hour period. Catch it all on your scanner. Also, it's "that time of the year" to put new batteries in my smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector. Done!

12-27-2023 - The Local Group, or at least some of them, is on the air on CB Radio Channel 23. You can usually find them at 5:30 PM. Listen in or join in!

12-27-2023 - NWS forecast - Today: Sunny through mid morning, then becoming partly sunny, with a high near 49. North northwest wind 8 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 31. North northwest wind 5 to 8 mph.

12-27-2023 - Good Morning! There's not much on the schedule today other than finishing those Christmas dinner leftovers. I've got the scanner on and listening to Walmart (154.570 MHz), the Allred Unit (153.815 MHz), the County Jail (155.520 MHz), the State Hospital (154.800 MHz), and the city transit buses (453.5375 MHz). School is still out for the Christmas breaks, so no school handheld radios (151.940 MHz) or school buses (152.360 MHz) today. The coffee is ready!

12-26-2023 - The Clay County Amateur Radio Club conducts a weekly Skywarn practice net on Tuesdays at 8:00 PM on the club's 146.680 MHz repeater. All licensed Amateur Radio Operators are invited to check in. Scanner listeners are also encouraged to tune in. Also, the Montague County Amateur Radio Club has a VHF net tonight - 147.320 MHz - but my antenna is a little too low to receive them consistently. I've been planning to raise that antenna for several years now, but I'm not sure I'll ever get around to it.

12-26-2023 - NWS forecast - Today: Sunny, with a high near 53. South wind 7 to 16 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 24 mph. Tonight: Clear, with a low around 32. West wind 7 to 9 mph.

12-26-2023 - Good Morning! It's Folgers Black Silk coffee time, and I'm listening to the 1947 kHz crew where I just learned that one of the participants also drinks Folgers Black Silk coffee. I don't have anything planned today other than enjoying Christmas dinner leftovers.

12-25-2023 - According to local news reports, Wichita Falls opthalmologist Mark Suggs was found dead in his office yesterday, but foul play was not suspected. An autopsy was ordered. Dr. Suggs was a licensed Amateur (ham) Radio operator - Technician class - from 2007 to 2017, when his license expired.

12-25-2023 - Good Morning! It's 5:30 AM on Christmas Day but that doesn't mean the radios will be quiet. I'm guessing the usual early morning "rag chews" on 80 and 160 meters will continue and the CB Radio will be wild as usual once the 11-meter band opens. My coffee is ready and it sounds like the 1947 kHz (Amateur Radio) crew is already active.
