01-22-2024 - I heard a short one-sided transmission on 462.6125 MHz. The content indicates a business of some sort. Further monitoring is required!
01-22-2024 - This coming weekend is the Gun & Knife Show - Jan 27, 9 AM – 5 PM - at the Ray Clymer Exhibit Hall (MPEC) - 1000 5th Street.
01-22-2024 - There's still no movement on the old Hawk Ridge Golf Course. A previous owner's plans to build apartments, homes, and a shopping center seem to have fizzled, and a new "For Sale" was erected. Now, it's just a weed farm (not that kind of weed!) and an occasional coyote sanctuary. There's no telling when we'll see activity there. Let's hope it's not a raging grass fire.
01-22-2024 - This coming weekend - Jan 27 & 28 - is the Annual Winter Field Day event. Listen across all Amateur (ham) Radio bands for stations calling "CQ Field Day." Like the Summer Field Day, it's basically a readiness exercise with a contest-like format. I've never participated in or even listened to Winter Field Day, so maybe it's time to join the fun.
01-22-2024 - From my law enforcement consultant - It was a Saturday evening in the early 1990s when the call of a family disturbance on Farris Street came in. A woman reported being assaulted by her husband and was not being allowed to leave the house. Police arrived, heard arguing going on inside, and knocked on the door but got no response. A loud scream from inside was all they needed to force the door open. As they burst into the living room, a perfectly-timed Cops TV show Bad Boys theme erupted from the television. The woman had minor injuries and an arrest was made.
01-22-2024 - NWS forecast - Today: Rain, mainly before 3pm. Patchy fog before 4pm. High near 40. East southeast wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Tonight: Patchy fog after 9pm. Otherwise, cloudy, with a low around 38. East southeast wind around 6 mph.
01-22-2024 - Good Morning! At 5:30 AM it's a heatwave of 32 degrees outside. I looked ahead in the NWS forecast and we're looking at 59 degrees for a high on Friday. The Lions and the Chiefs won their playoff games yesterday. My Folgers Black Silk is ready so I'll have a cup or two. I've been slacking on my Parks on the Air® contacts the last few days so I have some catching up to do in that department. The 1947 kHz crew is talking about the lack of people and Ham Radio gear at the Cowtown hamfest in Fort Worth this weekend. The consensus is that the cold weather was to blame. Let's see what the day brings.
01-21-2024 - I was 10 or 11 years old in St. Louis when I saw a stand-up comic on TV explaining how to mail a letter for free. He said you switch the "TO" and "FROM" addresses and leave off the stamp. So, I tried it. I put my name and address in the TO section and my girlfriend's name and address in the FROM section. I left off the stamp (4¢) and dropped the letter in the mailbox on the corner. In a day or two, Mr. Postman took the letter to her - just down the street - and said it needed a stamp. She says "OK, I'll find one and put it on later." I only did it once! Even at that young age I knew it would only work once or twice before the Feds came to snatch me up out of school in front of all my friends.
01-21-2024 - I've been wondering about the state of activity at our new Delta Hotel & Convention Center. Have we had any conventions since its opening? I know there have been a number of out-of-town high schools coming to town for various sports events. If they're staying overnight are they doing it at the Delta or one of the smaller hotels? Then, there's that nice restaurant. You know Wichita Falls and our love of burgers and fries. Will the restaurant survive? Also, I still need to find the frequencies of any handheld radios in use by Delta staff.
01-21-2024 - If you're not an Amateur (ham) Radio enthusiast, you might not know you can laugh in Morse code. To do so, you send ".... .. .... .." That's "HI HI". What's amusing, at least to me, are the hams on the voice portions of the band who actually say HI HI, instead of just laughing. It's not a crime to do so. If they have a right to do it, I have a right to be amused by it.

01-21-2024 - NWS forecast - Today: A 50 percent chance of showers after 4pm. Cloudy, with a high near 36. South southeast wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Tonight: Rain or freezing rain likely before 9pm, then freezing rain likely between 9pm and 4am, then rain or freezing rain likely after 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 31. South southeast wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New ice accumulation of 0.1 to 0.2 of an inch possible.
01-21-2024 - Good Morning! As I drink my Folgers Black Silk coffee, I see I missed the Cowtown Hamfest in Fort Worth this weekend. That's kind of OK because the last hamfest my wife and I attended - back in October - resulted in us both contracting Covid! Of course, you can get Covid walking through someone's sneeze cloud at Walmart. Luckily, ours were both mild cases. On the TV today is the Buccaneers/Lions and the Chiefs/Bills playoff games. On Amateur (ham) Radio, I might snag another Parks on the Air® station or two on Morse code.
01-20-2024 - It was almost 35 years ago when Wichita Falls city employees noticed something new on their paychecks. The new item was a line that said "Courtesy of the citizens of Wichita Falls." Tempers flared and complaints were made reminding the "powers that be" that a tip is a courtesy, but a paycheck is something owed. It wasn't long before the offending line was removed.
01-20-2024 - Our corrections consultant chimed in with a concern about the effectiveness of the heaters in the gun towers at the James V. Allred Unit prison. The electric heaters in the towers, as well as the "dog houses" at the interior gates, can barely keep up when the temps get below freezing. He says the heater at the 18/19 building dog house was so worthless, you couldn't burn your finger on it if you tried! He said he once had to sit in the chair and prop his feet up because the floor was too cold. On one occasion, all the heating in 7-Building shut down, and he, bundled in long underwear, heavy overalls, heavy jacket, and "trapper" hat with flaps down, thought he was going to freeze to death at the desk. The inmates had no such heavy-duty clothing.
01-20-2024 - NWS forecast - Today: Increasing clouds, with a high near 34. Light and variable wind becoming northeast 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23. Southeast wind around 7 mph.
01-20-2024 - Good morning! It's 5:30 AM and 14 degrees outside. I've got the outside faucets covered, the inside faucet farthest from the water meter dripping, and the coffee is brewing. On the agenda is a trip to the 8th & Austin Street edition of the Farmers Market. That is unless they decide it's too darn cold to be hustling corn nuts* today. Then, out to Natural Grocers for more supplies. Maybe a stop at Home Depot in between for a few toilet parts. There are two NFL football games later today. All that, interspersed with Hobby Radio communications, sounds like a full day. UPDATE: No corn nut sales today - the Farmer's Market will not open due to the cold weather. *Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman.

01-19-2024 - Today I made a CW (Morse code) contact with an Amateur (ham) Radio station in the Lost Dutchman State Park in Arizona. This was a "Parks on the Air®" activity.
