02-09-2024 - I haven't been on the CB Radio much over the last few months. I move in and out of Hobby Radio "phases." I might be heavily into CB Radio for months at a time, then move onto Amateur (ham) Radio Morse code, or other modes. I never completely abandon a service, but I've never been one to do everything in every service all of the time. So, when it comes to this website, there's no guarantee that I'll be talking about what you want to hear. That's why I call it a journal.

02-09-2024 - NWS forecast - Today: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 67. South southwest wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Tonight: Cloudy, with a low around 45. West southwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming north northeast after midnight.

02-09-2024 - Good Morning! It's Friday, but the days of the week really don't mean much to me anymore since I've retired. They're all Saturdays or Tuesdays, or whatever I want them to be. I was listening to those "older gentlemen" on 1947 kHz, and either someone is tuning up to join the conversation, or they're trying to jam those guys. It didn't last long so I'm guessing they were tuning up. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready, so I'll pour a cup and plan my not-so-busy day.

02-08-2024 - I made contact with AC6NT in Natchez Trace Parkway National Parkway (US-0642) in Tennessee on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

02-08-2024 - I made contact with N0HC in Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge (US-0227) in Colorado on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

02-08-2024 - From the U.S. Federal Communications Commission - The FCC Enforcement Bureau issued a Notice of Illegal Pirate Radio Broadcasting (NIPRB) per its authority from the PIRATE Act to landowners in Providence, RI, for allowing illegal broadcasting from their property.. Action by: Regional Director, Field Division, Enforcement Bureau. Adopted: 2024-02-08 by NIPRB. EB. //// The Commission also granted three complaints regarding the unauthorized change of subscriber's telecommunications carrier.

02-08-2024 - I heard a little chatter on 158.955 MHz this morning. This frequency is assigned to the Iowa Park Public Works department. The exchange was too short to tell what they were talking about. I don't hear them very often.

02-08-2024 - From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics - In January 2024, the unemployment rate was 3.7 percent for the third month in a row. The rate has been within the range of 3.4 percent and 3.8 percent since February 2022. The number of unemployed people was little changed at 6.1 million in January 2024. Among the unemployed, 2.2 million, or 34.7 percent, were job losers not on a temporary layoff.

02-08-2024 - It was Basic Training at Fort Polk (now Fort Johnson) in Louisiana. I was on the firing line at the .45 caliber pistol range. I had never fired a .45 caliber pistol before. I dropped the hammer on that first round. Wait, what was that? Did I actually see the bullet, for a split second, on its way to the target? Let me try that again. Boom! Yes, I did see the bullet for a split second. A big projectile, low-velocity, makes sense. I'm guessing that whoever was on the receiving end of that bullet must feel like they were hit with a baseball bat.

02-08-2024 - From my law enforcement consultant - A decade or so ago, the WFPD lost radio communications. Local Amateur (ham) Radio operators stepped up and provided voice base-to-car communications until the problem was corrected. If I remember correctly, it was just a one-day ordeal.

02-08-2024 - From my corrections consultant - "Count is clear" at the James V. Allred Unit. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice requires 8 counts during a 24-hour period. Unless there has been a change, the Allred Unit performs 9 counts daily. Tune in to the action at 153.815 MHz on your scanner radio.

02-08-2024 - According to news reports, a former Vernon, Texas ISD coach was convicted of one count of sexual performance by a child and one count of indecency with a child. Decades ago, it seemed like bank robbers and burglars dominated the news. Now it seems like sex crimes against children are the norm. Has there been a big shift in crime or just a big shift in reporting?

02-08-2024 - As a kid, I loved school supplies! The only thing wrong with school supplies was the act of going to school was somehow connected. From kindergarten to 12th grade, I had no love for school. I did enjoy college, though. That school supplies love became office supplies love in later years.

02-08-2024 - Good Morning! Last night, I dug the old Radio Shack DX-394 shortwave receiver out of the closet, set it on my bedside bookcase, tuned in some 40-meter CW (Morse code), put on the headphones, and listened to contacts being made. It was very relaxing. It's 5:15 AM and my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready! I'll have a cup and plan my day!
