07-11-2023 - In the early 1980s, Fuddruckers (burgers) appeared on the northwest corner of Kemp & Call Field. They didn't last very long. They said Wichita Falls wasn't quite ready for their type of restaurant. I took that as a compliment, but I'm sure many others did not. With Pat's, Ronnie's, and Willie's Place, who needs a Fuddruckers?

07-10-2023 - Many churches are now serving coffee after the sermon. Presumably, this is to get the people thoroughly awake before the drive home.

07-10-2023 - Two Spanish-speaking guys were heard today on 151.820 MHz, a MURS frequency. This is the first time I've heard them, and I'm glad to see someone using MURS, the Multi-Use Radio Service.

07-10-2023 - Our local Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter is active today. Tune in to their daily operations at 159.900 MHz with your scanner. You might be surprised how active they are.

07-10-2023 - From the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics - In May 2023, there were 215 metropolitan areas that had unemployment rates below the national U.S. rate of 3.4 percent, 153 areas had rates above the national rate, and 21 areas had rates equal to that of the nation. Burlington-South Burlington, Vermont, had the lowest unemployment rate, 1.3 percent, in May 2023. The next lowest rate was in Manchester, New Hampshire, 1.4 percent.

07-10-2023 - There's a lot of talk about the possibility of the Aurora Borealis / Northern Lights being seen across the northern states this week. A somewhat subdued display of the Northern Lights was seen in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1989. Maybe we'll get a repeat performance.

07-09-2023 - The Texas Department of Criminal Justice recently boosted pay for Correctional Officers. A Correctional Officer 4, with 3 years of service, will make $52,566 in 2023. In 2024 that figure rises to $55, 656. Even beginning Correctional Officers will earn $46,014 in 2023 and $49,104 in 2024. These figures are for maximum security units such as the James V. Allred Unit here in Wichita Falls. FACT: The Allred Unit is not in Iowa Park. It has an Iowa Park mailing address because that area has historically (before Wichita Falls annexed that land) been served by the Iowa Park Post Office.

07-09-2023 - Have you been around long enough to have watched a movie at the Seymour Road Drive-In at Seymour Road and McNiel? How about dancing at the Seymour Highway Electric Company in Fre-Mar Valley?

07-09-2023 - One of the things a dollar can't buy today is a dollar's worth of anything.

07-09-2023 - Wichita Falls needs an indoor skydiving attraction, also known as a vertical wind tunnel. Sheppard Air Force Base alone would keep it busy. I'd spend a few bucks reliving my old skydiving days! Besides, we need to be known for something other than a sawed-off skyscraper, a waterfall, and a Crepe Myrtle! What say you, Wichita Falls investors?

07-09-2023 - The "movie" page in a 1949 issue of the Wichita Falls Times shows a Skyway Drive-In located at the Archer City cutoff. The Azteca Theater at 408 Flood Street, The Falls Drive-In "just off Iowa Park Road on Sheppard Access Road". (Became the Twin Falls Drive-In.) The Open Air Theater on Iowa Park Road. (Was this an earlier name for the Twin Sheppard Drive-In in the 4000 Block of Old Iowa Park Road?) The Scottic Drive-In on the Henrietta Hwy near the Chicken Shack. The Lisa Theater at 1523 Monroe. The Gem and Texan theaters, locations not given. And, of course, our more recent editions such as the Wichita, Strand, and Tower Theaters. Also mentioned on the same page was Playland Park at 27th & Jacksboro Hwy and the Dancehaven Club at 401 N. Scott.

07-09-2023 - Since three-fourths of the earth's surface is water and one-fourth land, it's perfectly clear the good Lord intended that man spend three times as much time fishing as he does plowing.

07-09-2023 - A new Wichita Falls restaurant called Fully Loaded, featuring baked potatoes, has opened at 801 Indiana. This sounds very interesting. I'll let them work the kinks out before I drop in for a taste.

07-09-2023 - A few years ago, our local Walmart stores obtained some new shopping carts. It did not take long for some of these new carts to start showing wear and tear. I saw one with broken parts and several are starting to "wobble" already. So, this is a call for Walmart to again think about employing a full- or even part-time cart front-end alignment technicians!

07-09-2023 - The Fort Worth Bureau of Engraving & Printing (Money Factory) is once again open for tours and it makes for a great "day trip". This is one of two locations in the U.S. where paper money is made. (Coins are made at the Mint.) It's located just off U.S. 287 before you get to I-35, so there's no traffic hassle for Wichita Falls visitors.
