02-12-2024 - There will be an "open house" at the WFISD Career Education Center on Monday, Feb 19, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. It's located at 500 Hatton Road. I'll be there. I've never seen the inside, and a visit is past due!
02-12-2024 - Tonight at 7 PM it's the Harlem Globetrotters 2024 World Tour at the Kay Yeager Coliseum 1000 5th Street. I saw the Globe Trotters when they came to town in 1980. Something tells me these are not the same players.
02-12-2024 - NWS forecast - Today: Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 50. Northwest wind 8 to 11 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 29. West southwest wind around 6 mph.
02-12-2024 - Good Morning! I gave up on the Chiefs / 49ers game with about 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter. For me, it was the most boring Superbowl ever. I woke up to find out the Chiefs won in overtime. That's not important. What's important is my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready! Oh, and the Daytona 500 is Sunday. I'm not a huge race fan, but I watch from time to time.
02-11-2024 - I saw this headline; "Is Media Prepared for Extinction-Level Event?", and I wondered how it could possibly matter.
02-11-2024 - I made contact with AE4LH at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park (US-0756) in San Antonio, Texas on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program. A little research tells me I need to visit this place!
02-11-2024 - I made contact with WD2E at Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge (US-0258) in Florida on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.
02-11-2024 - I made contact with KD3D at PA 197 State Game Land (US-8894) in Pennsylvania on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.
02-11-2024 - My scanner radio came alive on the International Space Station Amateur (ham) Radio repeater downlink frequency of 437.800 MHz. I got 30 seconds of audio before signal lost. I must be on the edge of the ISS radio footprint on this pass. I'll stay tuned.
02-11-2024 - I made contact with W4ARB in Tuskegee National Forest (US-4451) in Alabama on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program. I attempted this one yesterday but conditions were bad and there was no evidence that the POTA station got my signal report. They got it today!

02-11-2024 - Wichita Falls, tune in with your scanner radio: Walmart (154.570 MHz), Allred Unit (153.815 MHz), the County Jail (155.520 MHz), State Hospital (154.800 MHz) city transit buses (453.5375 MHz), school handheld radios (151.940 MHz), and school buses (152.360 MHz).
02-11-2024 - Here's a novel idea for Ham Radio and even CB Radio clubs: Ditch your Facebook page and conduct club business on an actual website. Require each member to contribute a paragraph or two each month detailing their Hobby Radio activities. Before long, you'll have a website loaded with Hobby Radio "keywords" that your club can cash in on by adding contextual advertising to the website. I'm talking about Google Adsense or other affiliate program such as Shareasale. Why not? You've been donating those keywords to Facebook, where the upper elite get richer from every word you donate. Keep that cash in your club and maybe you can pay your members a dividend instead of charging dues.
02-11-2024 - NWS forecast - Today: Rain. High near 45. North northeast wind around 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible. Tonight: Rain and snow likely, mainly before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. Northwest wind 16 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
02-11-2024 - Good morning! It's Superbowl Sunday. At 5:30 AM it's cold and rainy outside so I'll stay inside. The Folgers Black Silk coffee is brewing. Someone is either tuning up, or jamming the old guys on 1947 kHz. I'm not sure if I'll be doing any Parks on the Air® today, but anything's possible. The coffee is ready and I'm moving over to 40 meters for some morning Morse code listening practice.
02-10-2024 - I hear kids playing on 462.5375 MHz, a GMRS frequency. These are most likely "bubble pack" FRS/GMRS radios. I base this on (1) they're kids, (2), the "hello, hello, hello, hello", and (3), the incessant "roger beeps." They must be close by because the scanner I'm hearing them on is using an attic-mounted discone antenna - one of my two "storm" antennas.
02-10-2024 - On the Parks on the Air® website, I see only one station active - NR1D on CW (Morse code) at US-1679 Higganum Reservoir State Park in Connecticut. At the moment, he's too weak for me to attempt contact. I'll stay tuned and wait for band conditions to improve. I also found W4ARB on CW (Morse code) in US-4451 Tuskegee National Forest. He was "in and out" but I decided to call him at a high point of his signal. He answered and gave me a good signal report. I returned with his signal report. No answer. He disappeared for a full minute. When I heard him again, he was working another station. I'll check my "hunter log" this evening to see if he entered the contact. It's Saturday, so there'll be a lot of "contests" on the air. Maybe I'll wait until Monday to resume my Parks on the Air® activities.
02-10-2024 - National Weather Service Storm Spotter training is today at 9 AM at the Multi-Purpose Events Center in Wichita Falls. It's free to all!
02-10-2024 - NWS forecast - Today: Showers likely, mainly between 9am and 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. North northeast wind 6 to 10 mph becoming east in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Tonight: Rain likely, mainly after midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 41. Northeast wind 8 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
02-10-2024 - Good Morning! At the Multi Purpose Events Center today is the John Crist: Emotional Support Tour. I've never heard of him, but he's here! Also today is the 2024 Txolan Sweetheart Spectacular And Bluebonnet Stakes Alpaca Shows. I've never met an Alpaca, either. The Harlem Globetrotters will be at the MPEC on the 12th. It's 5:30 AM, I didn't win the Mega Millions last night, and my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready!

02-09-2024 - From the U.S. Federal Trade Commission - The Federal Trade Commission has obtained a $195 million judgment against Simple Health Plans LLC and its CEO Steven J. Dorfman over charges they duped consumers into signing up for sham health care plans that did not deliver the coverage or benefits they promised and effectively left consumers uninsured and exposed to limitless medical expenses.
