02-23-2024 - This afternoon, I'm hearing base to portable or mobile communications on 31.240 MHz. I had this frequency locked out on my scanner for some reason, and now I can't remember who it is or why I locked it out. I guess I'll have to leave it unlocked so I can solve this mystery.

02-23-2024 - My QCX - Mini* QRP (5-watt) 20 Meter CW (Morse code) tranceiver is on the way, according to the FedEx tracking program. It is scheduled to arrive Monday. I'll soon be hitting the local parks to roast weenies and play Amateur (ham) Radio. *It's about the size of a deck of playing cards.

02-23-2024 - You might have heard, or experienced, the cell phone outage with several carriers that occurred yesterday. Pharmacies were also hit. AT&T reports that their issue was software-related and not a cyber attack. Of course, this will not change the mind of conspiracy theorists who will say that the AT&T report was "suggested" by shady government operatives. Well, that's certainly possible. The pharmacy incidents were reported as cyber attacks. The good news is the incidents caused a lot of people on social media to talk about getting CB or Amateur (ham) radios.

02-23-2024 - Good Morning! Another mild day is the National Weather Service report for Wichita Falls. I'll take a high of 69 in February, but that doesn't mean I want 109 in August. We all know it's going to happen anyway. Have you ever driven through the 400 Block of Flood Street? It's barren today, but the 400 and 500 blocks were once home to a theater, a hotel, a doctor's office, a dentist's office, a barber shop, a grocery store, an apartment building, a service station, an adult beverage store, and night clubs. A few blocks away - in the 200 Block of 7th Street - was the home of the Skip Shooters QSL CB Radio Club. I think my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready!

02-22-2024 - There was a lot of lively chatter on 151.880 MHz this evening. That's one of the frequencies in the Multi-Use Radio Service, a low-power, license-free personal communications service. 02-22-2024 - I've said it before and I'll say it again; 10th Street between Scott and Indiana is a teeth-jarring abomination of a travesty. The only people happy with that stretch of road are the owners of front-end alignment shops.

02-22-2024 - According to news reports, the Red Lobster chain is up for sale. The company hasn't been doing well financially and lost close to $12 Million on its "all you can eat" shrimp" program. If you're wondering about the Wichita Falls location, you might be asking yourself "What does it all mean?" I have no idea.

02-22-2024 - Amateur (ham) Radio operator KI5LET is racking up the contacts on 146.520 FM simplex while aeronautical mobile on Southwest Airlines Flight 2700, Dallas Love Field to Midland, Texas. He said he was on a handheld radio with a "rubber duck" antenna next to the window. He must be a crew member because he's really loud, and he's been at it for quite a while. There's nothing wrong with being loud and having fun during an aeronautical mobile operation, but I'm sure a passenger would have been zip-tied and duct-taped by now.

02-22-2024 - According to several sources, there were outages at multiple cell phone service providers last night. Of course, the conspiracy theorists are coming out of the woodwork. But that doesn't mean it's not a conspiracy. Well, you know about the boy who cried "wolf" story. But you know who is the least concerned? Those of us who can keep communicating without cell phone infrastructure.

02-22-2024 - Wichita Falls has had an interesting history when it comes to hotels and motels. At one time, East Scott had 6 motels. Now, there are none. Over the last 30 years, we've had hotels popping up all over town. We've had two large hotels, just north of the downtown area, close. Now, the massive (for Wichita Falls) Delta Hotel and Convention Center has opened. At least one more smaller hotel is under construction. Our population, which has remained static for as long as most Wichitans have been alive, apparently is sufficient to support these establishments. Whatever works, I guess.
