03-10-2024 - Our local Air Evac Lifeteam crew has been busy this morning. I didn't have my scanner radio on but I heard the helicopter twice between 5:30 AM and 7:30 AM. Their frequency is 159.900 MHz.
03-10-2024 - I was listening to CW (Morse code) on the 40 meter Amateur (ham) Radio band this morning when I heard a "novice" - WN**** - call sign. I looked up the call on QRZ and found that the operator, now holding a General Class license, reclaimed his old novice call from 50 years ago under the vanity call sign program. Cool!
03-10-2024 - NWS Forecast - Today: Sunny, with a high near 65. South wind 3 to 8 mph. Tonight: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming clear, with a low around 41. South wind around 8 mph.
03-10-2024 - Good Morning! There was a "prison break" at the James V. Allred Unit last night! No, not that kind. I'm talking about moving the clocks forward so that the Allred 12½ hour shift became an 11½ hour shift. That's not much of a break, but I'm sure it's appreciated. Of course, this applied to night shift workers everywhere. They'll pay dearly for it at the next time change! My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready!
03-09-2024 - I just heard a pilot make a position report at Kickapoo Airport on 122.800 MHz. That's a slight problem because 122.800 MHz is the Wichita Valley Airport frequency. Kickapoo CTAF* is 122.700 MHz. Happy landings! *Common Traffic Advisory Frequency.
03-09-2024 - I made contact with KD5IE at Cleveland Lakefront State Park (US-1942) in Ohio on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

03-09-2024 - From my corrections consultant, C.O. 5 Mitch "Miscount" Murray - I was working 7/8 Gate one afternoon. This is the intersection of the walkways leading to 7-Building and 8-Building. There is a "doghouse", a shack not much bigger than the old phone booth, at this location. I had a brown paper sack containing two baked chicken leg quarters in the doghouse. It was chow time for both buildings and I was working those two gates as the offenders went to chow and then returned to their buildings. After chow was over and the dust settled, I went to retrieve my chicken. The sack was gone. I was never more than 10 feet from the doghouse and someone stole my chicken! Was it a tag team effort? Did someone distract me with some BS question while their partner in crime stole my food? It's possible. All I could do was laugh. Tune in to Allred daily operations at 153.815 MHz on your scanner radio.

03-09-2024 - NWS Forecast - Today: Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 56. North wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Tonight: Clear, with a low around 33. North wind 5 to 8 mph becoming light and variable.
03-09-2024 - Good Morning! It's Saturday, and I have nothing important on my schedule today. I'm listening to local scanner radio traffic as I'm sipping my Folgers Black Silk coffee and feeling sorry for those poor souls waiting in line for Starbucks. My cup of Folgers probably cost around 10¢. If I want to fancy it up I'll add some hazelnut creamer for around 5¢ more. Or, if I'm really feeling grown up, maybe a splash of Jim Beam Honey Bourbon. I'll bet they don't have that at Starbucks! But I only do that at night.
03-08-2024 - Special Event Station - There will be an Amateur (ham) Radio "special event" station on the air 1700Z-2359Z 03-09-2024, from the USS Midway Museum, commemorating the launching of the USS Midway on March 20, 1945. Listen for NI6IW on 7.250, 14.320, and 14.070 MHz.
03-08-2024 - My scanner radio is busy this afternoon, but it's busy every afternoon at this time. The school buses (yellow chain buses*) - 152.360 MHz - are picking up kids and dropping them off. The Allred Unit - 153.815 MHz - is running the last chow of the day. Yes, all chow times - breakfast, lunch, and dinner, start at what most would call a little early. I'm sure the offenders have adjusted. *Chain buses - white in Texas - transport convicts from one prison to another. I'm guessing some kids think they're being hauled to a prison of sorts. Anyway, tune in with your scanner radio.

03-08-2024 - I made contact with AC4BT at Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park (US-2101) in New York on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.
03-08-2024 - I've got the laptop on top of a Walmart "milk crate" to form a simple stand-up desk. I've been standing at it for an hour, intermittently walking in place, surfing the web, drinking coffee, and listening to conversations in Morse code on the 40-meter Amateur (ham) Radio band via my Yaesu 857D. Oh, and I have a fireplace video roaring on the big-screen TV. I have to stay in shape. A dozen years ago, I commented on someone's age. I was told, "You can't talk. You're one hip fracture away from a nursing home!"
