07-26-2025 - 5:05 AM - Current National Short Range Weather Forecast

07-26-2025 - 5:40 AM - I hear short exchanges on Channel 21 that sound like operations involving an oversized load. The exchanges are short, but I'm now hearing enough to confirm the oversized load mission. I had to filter out the non-mission banter to figure out what they are doing.

07-26-2025 - 5:00 AM - There is a pickup truck in town sporting dual 102-inch steel whip antennas. I don't know the driver, but if he's active on the CB Radio, I've no doubt heard him. This reminds me of that 1/4 wave fiberglass whip I had on a Chevy Vega. That was a sight!

07-26-2025 - 8:30 AM - On Channel 19, a trucker is complaining about an oversized load with a police escort. He says they won't let him pass. I don't know what to think about that.

07-26-2025 - 9:00 AM - The CB Radio band is currently very quiet. I guess it's going to have a late awakening this morning. Better late than never.

07-26-2025 - 10:15 AM - Not surprisingly, the band is beginning to open with Channel 6, the "superbowl". Other channels will not be far behind.

07-26-2025 - 1:00 PM - Quite surprisingly, the band opening that I mentioned earlier promptly reversed course and closed down, and it remains shut down at least in North Texas. I'm going out for pizza.

07-26-2025 - 7:00 PM - The band is still flat here in North Texas. Or, maybe someone cut my coaxial cable! I don't know if the Local Group got on Channel 23 this evening as I was busy on Netflix.

07-26-2025 - 8:30 PM - According to Texoma's Home Page (KFDX), Carey's Corner, a convenience store, is closing after 33 years. I've never heard of it. Upon checking, I see that it's in the 4600 block of Jacksboro Hwy. That's why I've never heard of it. I'm on that block maybe once every 10 years.

07-25-2025 - 5:00 AM - Good Morning! It's Friday, and I just heard a short bursts of activity on Channels 6 (the "superbowl" of CB Radio), 7, and 29. Could the band be trying to awaken at this early hour? Time will tell. It might be time to mow my yard again. It all depends on how I feel about that task. I'll know more around 8:00 AM. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready!

07-25-2025 - 5:10 AM - Wichita Falls Forecast - Today: Sunny and hot, with a high near 102. Heat index values as high as 106. South wind 6 to 8 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 77. South southeast wind around 8 mph.

07-25-2025 - 5:15 AM - Current National Short Range Weather Forecast

07-25-2025 - 5:15 AM - Quoting the QuikTrip website: "For a limited time, you can grab TWO of QT’s classic all-beef hot dogs and an ice-cold Big Q fountain drink for just $5!" I have no idea how long this will last.

07-25-2025 - 5:30 AM - Quoting the Pilot Flying J website: "Pick your choice of chips and candy, fill any size fountain drink and load up three chicken tenders — all for just $8." I have no idea how long this will last.

07-25-2025 - 6:00 AM - It was in 1964, before I received my set of Spacephone walkie-talkies for Christmas, when I saw a classmate of mine in a barber shop. In his shirt pocket was a futuristic-looking Heathkit GW-31 CB Radio walkie-talkie. This radio was real Man From U.N.C.L.E. spy-grade stuff! If I had mentioned GW-31 to my parents, I might have received one or two for Christmas, but I didn't, so I didn't. They were a little on the expensive side.

07-25-2025 - 6:30 AM - I'm now experiencing short bursts of activity on more channels across the band. Nothing solid or sustained. It's like "Whack-A-Mole". We'll have a later band opening than we did yesterday. Of course, this is all based on my Zero Five Ground Plane antenna. Your conditions might be different.

07-25-2025 - 1:00 PM - I mowed 2/3 of my yard. I'll get the rest tomorrow. Maybe. The CB Radio band is alive and well this afternoon with booming signals everywhere. Two truckers are chatting on Channel 19 as they pass through town. One of them can't put two sentences together without an F-bomb. It must be sad to be that inarticulate. Speaking of F-bombs, see the next post.

07-25-2025 - 4:15 PM - I had plenty of fun with CB Radio at Fort Hood in 1972. For about 6 months, I was one of my unit's permanent CQ (Charge of Quarters) guys. On my duty nights, I would sometimes, after all the "rank" had left the area, set up my CB Radio, power supply, and filing cabinet-mounted mag-mount antenna. I was in business, and there were plenty of people to chat with in the Killeen-Fort Hood area. I can still hear "A Horse With No Name" by America coming from my "good times" radio nearby. I recall a married couple who re-enlisted and used their bonuses to purchase additional CB Radio equipment. It would have been a cruel joke if the Army had transferred them to a country where CB Radio use was illegal or impractical. By the way, that regular CQ schedule allowed me to obtain my Private Pilot Certificate at what was then Killeen Municipal Airport. The school was Four Winds Aviation. I learned in a Cessna 150. The plane rental was $12 an hour, and the instructor was $6 an hour. Wow!

07-25-2025 - 6:10 PM - The Local Group is on Channel 23. The rest of the band is also in pretty good shape. There's some local traffic on Channel 1. Of course, the "superbowl" on Channel 6 is still in session. And, the Texas Rangers will be on TV at 7:05. That's where I'll be.
